What are you most thankful for this year?

Winter weather can be harsh and can damage your home. Take action now to protect your home by following these steps:​

- Cover outside faucets with insulated spigot covers or wrap with towels. All other exterior, above-ground valves and pipes should also be insulated (with items found at hardware stores).​
- To avoid pipes freezing, leave interior faucets trickling and open cabinet doors beneath sinks.​
- Disconnect garden hoses from outside faucets to reduce the chance of pipes freezing.​

Also, avoid the use of rock salt on driveways and sidewalks as it may cause surface corrosion. Sand is the recommended product to use.​

With holiday gatherings fast approaching, take the time to ensure your appliances are in good, working order. Here's how:​

- Ensure your kitchen appliances are working with a quick test by running each appliance (oven, stove, dishwasher).​
- When there's risk of overflow from food being cooked in the oven, place tin foil or an oven liner under the cookware, at the bottom of the oven, to catch potential spill over.​
- After oven use, wipe it clean of any overflows or spills.

With winter and the holidays quickly approaching, it's time to prepare your home for cold weather and gatherings. Start by checking your HVAC and fireplace, as follows:​

​- Replace HVAC air filters every three months. ​
- Test your heating system now, before it gets too cold, to ensure it’s ready for winter. ​
- Keep thermostats at a minimum of 55° (including when you're away for extended periods).​
- Be certain the fireplace flue is open, and the fireplace is clean before use. Close the flue once a fire is extinguished and when the fireplace is not in use.​
