OFF TO THE NATIONAL AT LORETTA LYNN’S

We started working with Tyler Maas at the end of the 2021 season after he captured the MVR/Race Tech Rising Star Award for showing massive improvement and a promising future.

Since then we’ve dialed in his race bikes and our guy has helped fine tune his riding, and has put in the work to earn a ticket to the starting gate at the Lorettas Lynn’s Amateur National Championships.

Got Xplorer forks? Ever notice that the clickers don’t really do much? We can fix that. We add an adjustable compression base to the bottom of the forks and convert the compression adjuster on top of the left fork to a rebound adjuster. This gives a lot more range of adjustments and now they actually work. Give us a call if you want more information.

Every once in awhile I take something apart and find something cool. On the left is a current Racetech Gold Valve. On the right in an older version. In the first picture you can see how much bigger the rebound ports have gotten and in the second picture you can see the compression bleed which was adjusted by changing the size of the jet.

Let’s take a minute and talk about fork mid valves. What’s a mid valve and why is it important?
The mid valve sits on top of the rebound piston and controls mid speed damping. This is the most important setting in your whole fork. There’s a measurement in the mid valve called float. The mid valve has a spring underneath it and float is the amount the shim stack moves before the shims start to bend and control oil flow.
Why is float important? If the float is too small the fork will be harsh. If the float is too large the fork will feel vague and not give good feedback.
Can you get it wrong? Yes in the past I’ve seen mid valve shim stacks get pinched on cup washers and bend shims, rebound nuts not torqed or loctited, once I even saw a guy forget to put the cup washer under the spring.
How much will the wrong float effect dampening? .1mm or .004” will make the difference between a fork you love or a fork you hate.
Supercross forks run float around .2mm enduro and trail riders can see float numbers around.8-1 mm.
What’s the right float for your bike? It’s not always easy but our numbers are from testing on Racetech’s suspension dyno and then backed up by real world testing.

WP AER forks don’t have a low speed valve on the compression post. We always recommend replacing that with a Racetech compression post that adds the low speed valve to make the forks perform as good as they can be.
