The Friends of the Heritage Library host community events and programs through out the year to raise awareness and raise money to help support the library efforts.

For those of you who've asked what happens with the unsold books, they go to Isle, Minnesota, where they are used in book sale fundraisers to benefit groups in that area of our state. šŸ„°

Library of Congress National Book Festival Announces Full Author Lineup 06/12/2023

The National Book Festival takes place on August 12. Sponsored and hosted by the Library of Congress, this one-day extravaganza celebrates the American library tradition of across all genres and formats. Better still, you don't need to be in Washington DC to enjoy the festivities. Thanks to special funding, most of the main stage events will be livestreamed or recorded for broadcast after the fact.

Headliners will include novelists Rebecca Makkai and TJ Klune, U.S. Poet Laureate Ada LimĆ³n, and YA favorites Jesmyn Ward and Elizabeth Acevedo.

School is out here in Lakeville and summer has begun! Starting June 12, head to your nearest location to pick up your free Summer Discovery book and activity log - available while supplies last! Materials are available for Pre-Readers (birth-age 4), Readers (grades K-5), and Teens (grades 6-12). If you need reading suggestions, check out the libraryā€™s summer reading booklists or try the Book Match online for a personalized list of recommendations.

For teens looking for summer volunteering opportunities, the Heritage Library will be holding their Volunteen orientation. Open to youth ages 13-18. Complete the application on the website and a librarian will contact you to get you registered and ready to go!
And for a fun spring craft, make a wooden backyard birdfeeder! Presented on Saturday by ArtStart and geared for adults. Registration is currently full but a waitlist is available!

Calling all teens! Support summer reading and learning program by participating in Volunteens. Teens ages 13-18 are invited to volunteer to distribute free books and program materials, explain how the program works, and assist with summer events and projects. Attendance at an orientation is required to volunteer - the orientation at the Heritage Library will be held on Thursday, June 1 from 6:30-7:30pm. It was a full house for OneBook OneLakeville! After opening remarks by Heritage Library Branch Manager Stephanie Opstad and Mayor Luke Hellier, Emcee Miss Shannan Paul and New York Times Bestselling Author led patrons through a riveting and emotional discussion of I Must Betray You. The fragility of democracy, the power of compassion, the value of taking time to understand others and their personal stories, resilience and the importance of working together were a few of the themes that emerged throughout the evening.
