This article will show you some quick and easy ways to get the most from your next home improvement project.

For the best quality home improvements, consider what you want to accomplish before you begin. Once you have begun the project, having a plan will make it easier to follow through on. Get inspiration from the homes of your friends, magazines or home improvement television shows. Don’t approach home improvement and home décor in a haphazard way; instead, decide what you like and create a plan to make it happen.

Here are some tips to help you:

The many moods of lighting. Having proper lighting that works well in an area can make a big difference. The brighter the room, the more welcoming it will seem; on the other hand, a nicely dim room can feel more intimate. Consider spot lighting instead of one big light in the center.

Throw pillows can customize a teen’s room. If you have a pre-teen or a teen, they’ll love being able to spruce up their room with throw pillows, especially ones that have been decorated with clothes that no longer fit. Grab some clothes such as jeans that no longer fit, or old band shirts, and cut up your pieces to fit the desired pillows, then sew the pieces together. This will enhance their room with a bit more flavor and personality.

Look beyond the art. Adding distinctive touches to your walls can be done with simple three-dimensional tiles instead of purchasing generic pieces of artwork. For instance, a three-dimensional tile works great if you contrast the colors. You can even buy some canvas and a frame and paint colored squares. Anything colorful can work as art, and it allows you to pick and choose the right colors and textures that match a room.

Lampshades—the surprisingly way to tie a room together. Many lampshades can often be boring. However, you can dramatically improve a room simply by decorating these shades with stencils and paint from a craft store. This instantly (and affordably) turns a dreary lamp into a focal point in any room. Plus, it allows you to match the color or theme of the room!

Don’t forget to decorate the outside too! Make sure to take full advantage of your home's outdoor space. Treat your backyard as a natural extension of your home by making it a more enjoyable place to spend time. Include comfortable chairs, a table, and an awning and movable dividers to give the space the feeling of a “room”. This area would be great for entertaining, barbecuing or just relaxing.
