This month, we pray with Pope Francis that humanity will be good stewards of the creation that God gave us dominion over, as we read in the book of Genesis: "Then God said: Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the tame animals, all the wild animals, and all the creatures that crawl on the earth" (1:26). ⁣

The St. Catherine Ladies Guild will lead the rosary at 3:30 pm on Saturday, August 31st, and at 10:30 am on Sunday, September 1st. All parishioners are invited to pray with us.⁣

Este mes, oramos con el Papa Francisco para que la humanidad sea buena administradora de la creación sobre la que Dios nos dio dominio, como leemos en el libro del Génesis: "Entonces Dios dijo: Hagamos al hombre a nuestra imagen, conforme a nuestra semejanza. Hoy la Iglesia conmemora la decapitación de San Juan Bautista, patrono de nuestra Diócesis. San Juan Bautista, precursor de Cristo, fue martirizado en defensa de la ley de Dios.Lee lo que dicen las Sagradas Escrituras sobre el martirio del santo:"Herodes había arrestado a Juan, lo había atado y lo había puesto en la cárcel por causa de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano Felipe, porque Juan le había dicho: "No te es lícito tenerla". Aunque quería matarlo, temía al pueblo, porque lo tenían por profeta. Pero en una celebración del cumpleaños de Herodes, la hija de Herodías bailó ante los invitados y agradó tanto a Herodes que juró darle todo lo que pidiera. Today, the Church commemorates the beheading of St. John the Baptist, patron saint of our Diocese. St. John the Baptist, forerunner of Christ, was martyred in defense of the law of God.Read what Scripture says about the saint's martyrdom:"Now Herod had arrested John, bound [him], and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, for John had said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, for they regarded him as a prophet. But at a birthday celebration for Herod, the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests and delighted Herod so much that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for. Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests who were present, he ordered that it be given, and he had John beheaded in the prison. His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. His disciples came and took away the co**se and buried him; and they went and told Jesus." (Matt. 14:3-12).

August 28 is St. Augustine's feast day. This great bishop and doctor of the Church converted after many years of straying far away. His life is a testament to the power of a praying mother. His mother saw that his way of life was going to lead him to hell, and she constantly prayed for his conversion. He became a great saint and his writings continue to influence the Church today.⁣

Today is the feast of St. Monica, mother of St. Augustine. Monica was married to a Roman pagan who would not allow her to have her children baptized. She constantly prayed for her husband and children and was known to serve and make peace with everyone she met.⁣

Hoy se recuerda al Papa San Pío X, conocido como el "Papa de la Eucaristía" por haber rebajado la edad de la Primera Comunión para que más niños pudieran recibir a Jesús. Pope St. Pius X is remembered today. He is known as the "Pope of the Eucharist" for lowering the age of First Holy Communion so more children could receive Jesus. Throughout his life, he often gave away his own clothes, food and money to the poor. He worked tirelessly to teach the faith to children and adults alike.

August 15 is the oldest feast of Our Lady, the Feast of the Assumption. As the mother of God was preserved from sin in her earthly life, God did not allow her body to undergo any corruption. After her death, her soul and body were raised into Heaven.
In 1950, Pope Pius XII declared that the Assumption was a matter of dogma for Catholics. He said, "5. Now God has willed that the Blessed Virgin Mary should be exempted from this general rule. She, by an entirely unique privilege, completely overcame sin by her Immaculate Conception, and as a result she was not subject to the law of remaining in the corruption of the grave, and she did not have to wait until the end of time for the redemption of her body" (Munificentissumus Deus).

Stewardship Thought for the Week: Christ makes it quite clear that he expects us to be different. One of the ways he expects us to be different is by practicing stewardship of time, talent and treasure.

Hoy honramos a San Lorenzo, diácono y mártir. San Lorenzo es conocido por su ingenio y alegría espiritual, incluso cuando sufrió los mayores sufrimientos que podamos imaginar. Today we honor St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr. St. Lawrence is known for his wit and spiritual joy, even as he underwent the greatest sufferings we can imagine. As he was burned to death on a gridiron, he remained perfectly joyful and resigned to God's will. He was fiercely dedicated to serving the poor and needy. St. Lawrence, patron of Rome, chefs, students, firefighters, and the poor, pray for us!

Hoy celebramos la festividad de Santa Teresa Benedicta de la Cruz, también conocida como Edith Stein. Filósofa judía alemana convertida en carmelita descalza. Experimentó una conversión al catolicismo cuando leyó la autobiografía de Santa Teresa de Ávila. Fue una gran devota de los sufrimientos de Nuestro Señor en la cruz.
En 1942 fue sacada de su convento y llevada a Auschwitz, donde fue asesinada.

Today, we celebrate the feast of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, who is also known as Edith Stein. German Jewish philosopher turned Discalced Carmelite. She experienced a conversion to Catholicism when she read the autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila. She was deeply devoted to the sufferings of Our Lord on the cross.
In 1942, She was taken from her convent to Auschwitz where she was killed.

Esta semana es la Semana Nacional Simplifica tu Vida. Como católicos, podemos aprovechar este momento para reflexionar sobre el propósito de las cosas creadas. En un mundo obsesionado con coleccionar cosas nuevas, recordemos que estamos llamados a deshacernos de todo aquello que nos aleje de Dios.

This week is National Simplify Your Life Week. As Catholics, we can take this time to reflect on the purpose of created things. In a world obsessed with collecting new things, we remember that we are called to get rid of anything that keeps us from God.

Pensamiento de mayordomía para la semana: La multitud en el Evangelio de hoy pedía un signo a Jesús y quería saber qué obra había El hecho para inspirar su fe. Que nuestra fiel administración de los bienes de Dios sea un signo para los demás de que nosotros, como los Efesios en la segunda lectura, hemos dejado a un lado nuestra forma de vida anterior y que hemos adquirido una “Nueva forma espiritual de pensar” en Cristo.

Happy memorial of St. Julian Eymard! The Apostle of the Eucharist said on his death bed, "I have nothing more to tell you. You already have the Eucharist. What more do you want?" St. Julian reminds us that when we have the Eucharist, we have all that we could ever need.
