Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT (like the word, “act”), is an evidence-based framework that acknowledges both internal events (thoughts, feelings, sensations) and outward behaviors (what we do).
The goal of ACT is psychological flexibility, or the ability to observe and understand our own thinking processes and to be flexible in how we respond to them.

Mindfulness: The practice of being aware of and/or living in the present moment

The purpose of Defusion strategies is easy to remember- just think about defusing a bomb! You want to defuse that thing before it explodes, just like Defusion strategies in ACT are used to help you regulate and calm yourself when you’re feeling upset, before you make a mistake in your behavior. Defusion helps you not to fuse to unhelpful thoughts or actions.
