Tutor Training 2022!

Timeline photos 03/23/2022

And our own Head Tutor Emerita Briana Krewson!
https://www.facebook.com/fandm/photos/a.141950626013/10159477416166014/

Briana Krewson '17 discovered her keen interests in medicine and sustainability measures as a Biological Foundations-Neuroscience major at F&M. After completing a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Poland, she pivoted to pursuing a career as a doctor. She’s currently a third-year medical student at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is in the process of deciding which specialty she wants to pursue for her residency as she works through her clinical rotations.

We asked her to talk about her career path five years out of College, how her classroom and extracurricular experiences shaped her evolving bedside manner, and why the willingness to say 'yes' to opportunities at F&M and beyond have been a difference-maker in her life.

F&M: How has your liberal arts education prepared you for what you are currently doing?

Briana: My liberal arts education from F&M has been fundamental in how I relate to my patients; my ease in communicating with my patients can be partially attributed to my training at F&M, where I learned how to be clear, direct, and concise while being compassionate and empathetic.

One of my two gap years between graduating from F&M and starting medical school was spent living abroad in Poland as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant. I worked as a tutor at the F&M Writing Center, which was by far one of my favorite experiences during my time in Lancaster. That training prepared me for my role as an English teacher at a Polish university.

F&M: What brief advice would you give an admitted student who is considering attending F&M?

Briana: My advice to admitted students considering attending F&M is to take advantage of opportunities, to always say 'yes' (within healthy limits). The more you engage with your community, the more you’ll get out of your experience, no matter what phase of life you’re in. F&M brought me some of my closest friends and exposed me to passions that I didn’t even know I had. I’m forever grateful that I took a 'leap of faith' in myself, that I always tried, and that I always said 'yes!'

Today the staff met with learning support specialist Amy Faust from Student Accessibility Services to talk about neurodiversity and how we can better support tutees with learning differences at the Writing Center.

One of our favorite recommendations she gave was what's known as the Pomodoro Technique to avoid procrastination. There are a multitude of apps and websites which make use of this technique to help you stay on top of your work.

Of course, the Pomodoro Technique works even better when paired with regular Writing Center sessions, so give them both a try!

The Writing Center staff had a fun time last weekend celebrating and catching up with tutors from the class of 2020. It’s always so exciting to see where our tutors end up. We’re so proud of you all, and we can’t wait for the next time we can be together, play games, and eat M&M’s in person! 03/22/2021

As the trees start to bloom and our days get sunnier, here are some helpful writing tips to keep in mind:

-The four seasons (spring, summer, fall, and winter) are common nouns – that means they do not need to be capitalized in writing!

-There is a meaningful difference between "weather" and "whether." While “weather” refers to our climate, “whether” is used to express alternative choices, such as “I need to decide whether I will study in Shad or go relax on Hartman Green.”

Questions? Please schedule a time to work with any of our tutors through WCOnline, and enjoy the warmer days approaching!

Happy First of March from the Writing Center Staff! As much as we’ll miss seeing Old Main and our very own Diagnothian in the snow, we’re excited for warmer weather. Regardless of the temperature, though, we encourage you to keep scheduling virtual appointments with our superb student staff!
