Do you know this mystery highlander? Share a memory you have with him below, and we may include it in the Fall 2024 issue of Cairn magazine.

Here's your hint:
"This mystery highlander is from the class of 1961. He later returned to serve on the faculty, eventually served as the dean of enrollment management and provost for academic affairs, and was given the designation of professor emeritus when he retired in 2006. He is actually the brother of another professor emeritus from the School of Education, who was a mystery highlander in a previous issue of the magazine."

Our University verse of the year is Galatians 2:20: "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me."

This will be the foundation for our endeavors and our conduct this year as we strive to follow the One who has made a way for us!

Storms Will Come [From a Faith Perspective —Bucks County Courier Times] - Cairn University 06/20/2024

Dr. Todd J. Williams' latest article in the Bucks County Courier Times reflects on the spiritual truths in Mark 4, also represented in Rembrandt's famous painting, The Storm on the Sea of Galilee. "The real and the metaphorical storms of life are certain to come, but the interaction between the disciples and Jesus on the Sea of Galilee is profoundly instructive and calls for faith." This month's episode of defragmenting is here!

Over his almost two decades as host of the UK-based radio program and podcast Unbelievable?, Justin Brierly facilitated countless thoughtful conversations about faith and unbelief between some of the world’s foremost atheists and Christian apologists. In his book The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God (and his podcast by the same name), Justin explores what led to the popularity of the so-called New Atheists in the early 2000s, as well as the internal conflicts that led to the movement’s implosion. He joined Dr. Keith Plummer to discuss that and why secular thinkers such as Jordan Peterson, Peter Boghosian, Louise Perry, and Tom Holland, to name a few, are finding it increasingly difficult to ignore the Christian story’s relevance to questions of science, history, culture, and our search for meaning.

Our Story

Cairn University enjoys a heritage that spans over one hundred years. Founded in 1913, it is the result of the merger of two separate institutions which formed Philadelphia Bible Institute in 1951, a school which offered only three-year diplomas and focused primarily on the training of lay people. In 1958, PBI became Philadelphia College of Bible when the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania granted the institution approval to offer a four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Bible degree. This established PCB as a school for training students for vocational ministry in the church and related organizations.

Strengthening its educational program by developing an academically rigorous core of biblical studies and liberal arts courses, PCB attained accreditation from the Middle States Association in 1967. In so doing, PCB became one of only a few Bible colleges in the nation to receive such regional accreditation. PCB then added the Bachelor of Music and the Bachelor of Social Work degrees, which began the development of a series of programs in various professional fields. This further distinguished PCB from traditional Bible colleges in America as graduates were being prepared for careers in fields other than vocational ministry within the church.

In 1979, the College relocated from Center City Philadelphia to the Bucks County suburb of Langhorne, Pennsylvania. Bachelor degrees in Education and Business Administration were developed as well as graduate level programs in Biblical Studies, Counseling, Education, Educational Leadership and Administration, Organizational Leadership, and a Master of Divinity. In 2000, the Commonwealth granted approval for university status and the institution changed its name to become Philadelphia Biblical University.

In 2012, the University’s Board of Trustees voted to change the name of the institution to Cairn University, in an effort to overcome the perception that the University’s educational offerings were limited and had a narrow vocational focus. The institution has had many names in its nearly 100-year history, but as PSOB, BIOP, PBI, PCB, PBU, and now as Cairn, the University’s central commitment to Christ and His Word remain.
