The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPTF) now recommends starting mammogram screenings every other year at age 40 to enhance early detection and improve treatment success.

Previously, the recommendation was to start at age 50 and talk to your doctor in your 40s about your individual risk.

The USPTF said the age for routine screening was dropped to account for the 2% increase in breast cancer diagnosis rates each year among women in their 40s.
