My colleagues and I passed a balanced budget that delivers extra funding to Double Up Food Bucks, making groceries more affordable for Michigan families struggling to get food on the table. If you shop for groceries with a SNAP/Michigan Bridge Card, this essential food security program allows you to double your benefits when you purchase fresh, Michigan-grown fruits and veggies.

I attended the annual Air & Spaces Air Force Association picnic at Selfridge Air National Guard Base with Colonel David Spehar and fellow colleague State Representative Denise Mentzer today.

It was great to hear firsthand about the economic impact the base continues to provide to Macomb County, and to discuss how we can continue to support critical infrastructure initiatives that will improve our state and country’s defense capabilities.

Today I joined Governor Gretchen Whitmer and my legislative colleagues for the signing of Senate Bill 747, the FY25 budget ominus bill for fiscal year 2024-2025.

I am proud to have voted to pass a budget that invests in safeguarding our environment, provides a pathway to higher education for future generations, uplifts our hometowns and improves our infrastructure.

The residents in the 13th District deserve accessible roads and water infrastructure that keeps our families healthy and safe. This budget brings critical resources back home, while prioritizing road repair and ensures that we have access to clean water.

The FY25 budget totals $82.5 billion, including a general fund total of $15 billion and a school aid budget total of $19 billion. It includes several items that will directly benefit our communities:

✅ $75 million dedicated to a new revenue sharing trust fund that supports local governments, first responders, transportation, and water infrastructure, as well as placemaking and recreation opportunities for residents

✅ $52 million to continue Michigan Reconnect, tuition-free college for adult learners 25 and older

✅ Expansion of the Michigan Achievement Scholarship with the Michigan Guarantee to ensure every Michigan high school graduate can receive an associate degree or skilled certificate tuition-free at a community college, saving more than 18,000 students up to $4,820 on tuition each year.

Tonight we stood together in solidarity remembering the victims and loved ones who were tragically impacted by the senseless act of gun violence recently in northeast Detroit.

Our thoughts and prayers are not enough.

Gun violence is hitting too close to our homes, invading our neighborhoods, our celebrations, our lives. It is a devastating reminder that we cannot afford to stand by and wait for change—we must be the change.

As State Representative, I will do everything in my power to ensure that we continue to pass meaningful legislation to address gun violence, invest in community programs, and ensure our neighborhoods are places where our children can play and grow without fear.

I’ll work with anyone, together with law enforcement, local leaders, and our residents to find and implement solutions that will help to protect our neighborhoods.

Each of us has a role to play in this fight. Whether it's volunteering, educating others, or simply having the courage to speak up, we must all do our part.

Tomorrow, let our partnership be a symbol of our hope, determination, and an unwavering commitment to a future free from gun violence. We owe it to the victims, their loved ones, and our neighbors to pledge to turn our grief into action, to transform our pain into progress.

Xiong Issues Response to Fatal Shooting in Detroit - housedems.com 07/07/2024

I am deeply saddened and heartbroken by the recent shooting near Detroit’s northeast side. My heart goes out to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this senseless act of violence. During what should have been a joyous celebration during Independence Day weekend, we are instead faced with a devastating reminder that gun violence is hitting too close to home, right in our own backyards.

As a community, we should be coming together to enjoy each other's company and celebrate the liberties we cherish, not living in fear of such tragedies. This incident underscores the urgent need to address gun violence and work towards creating a safer environment for all.

We must unite and take meaningful action to prevent these occurrences. Together, we can and must find solutions to ensure that our neighborhoods are safe havens where families can thrive without fear. Let us honor the victims by committing to this vital cause and working tirelessly to bring about change.

Michigan State Police is asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

This legislation will provide vital support for over 530,000 veterans and their families across our state, address the mental health needs of our veterans, make available critical resources to prevent veteran su***de while promoting well-being.

As your Representative, I will always stand by our veterans and seniors to ensure that they receive the respect, care, and support they deserve.

On this Independence Day Holiday Week, let’s unite to honor the heroes who have safeguarded our freedom.

After being at the State Capitol since 10:00 AM yesterday, working to pass the State Budget and multiple meaningful bills, I’m proud to share that at 5:15 AM this morning, the Michigan House of Representatives passed my first legislation, HB 5826 with bipartisan support.

In addition, I had the opportunity to vote for the first time on our State Budget, which will provide meaningful revenue sharing for local municipalities, investments in our schools, funding for infrastructure upgrades, and so much more!

I am so incredibly grateful to my colleagues, our staff, stakeholders, and everyone who had a role in making this possible.

HB 5826 creates a doula scholarship program for individuals who are training to become a doula in the state of Michigan while experiencing financial hardships.

This legislation will not only empower individuals to pursue meaningful careers as doulas, it will simultaneously improve maternal health for all mothers in our state.

The bill is now headed to the Senate chamber for a vote where I hope it will be taken up after the session break.

Today, I was incredibly proud to be a keynote speaker at PCMA's , sharing my journey from a refugee camp in Thailand to moving to at 18, and a story of resilience, reinvention, and innovation.

Reflecting on my path, I'm filled with gratitude for the residents of Warren and Detroit who have entrusted me with the privilege to advocate for our shared values: accessible childcare, affordable healthcare, quality education, social justice, and so much more.

Together, we are shaping a future rooted in compassion, equality, and opportunity for all. Let's continue to uplift and inspire one another every step of the way. 🌟✨

Today is dedicated to honoring the strength of millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes due to war, persecution, and unimaginable hardships.

Let us honor World Refugee Day with a call to action for each of us to stand in solidarity with refugees, to amplify their voices, and to ensure that they are welcomed with dignity and respect.

Let us work tirelessly to create policies and communities that are inclusive and supportive, where everyone can thrive and contribute their unique strengths and perspectives.

I truly enjoyed attending the today and meeting with neighbors and constituents. To everyone who made this event such a fun-filled success, thank you!

From the amazing live music to the activities for the kids, and the fireworks happening tonight, it is truly a great event for the community to enjoy.

Today, my children accompanied me as I proudly introduced HB 5826. This bipartisan legislation aims to establish a doula scholarship fund program to support individuals in Michigan who are training to become doulas while facing financial hardship.

Doulas play a crucial role in enhancing birthing outcomes, especially for Black mothers. They provide advocacy, continuous support, and expertise to both new and expecting mothers in hospitals. Research shows that doulas significantly reduce cesarean sections, preterm births, and other complications, leading to better health outcomes for both mothers and babies.

Supporting this legislation means empowering individuals to pursue meaningful careers as doulas while simultaneously improving maternal health across our state.

I’m proud to champion policies that uplift and support mothers. I’m also grateful to share with my own children the impactful experience of being a dedicated mommy legislator!

🧡 Across our country, and right here in our state, if you see someone wearing orange today, know that it is Gun Violence Awareness Day.

Today, we honor victims and survivors, and we demand a future free from gun violence. Wearing orange – the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves – is one small but powerful way we can raise awareness about gun prevention and safe storage.

Join us in standing together for a safer future.

Today marks 80 years since D-Day, a pivotal moment in history and a time for us to honor the valor and dedication of our soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy, fighting for liberty and justice.

Their bravery and sacrifice paved the way for the freedoms we cherish today.

🎉🥁 Drum roll, please…

I’m excited to share that yesterday, June 4, and today, June 5, 2024, I officially introduced my first two bills in the House.

The first bill is part of a package with colleagues that would create the Money Transmission Modernization act, in addition to providing regulators with the tools needed to regulate money transmitters of all sizes, including those that operate globally or small businesses operating locally, it will help to increase consumer protection for residents.

The second bill is a bipartisan piece of legislation, co-sponsored by both my Democratic and Republican colleagues, to amend the State’s 1978 Respiratory Care Licensing Act, PA 368, which hasn’t been updated in decades.

Respiratory Therapists provide essential emergency care in hospital settings around the state and were at the front line of the COVID-19 outbreak, face to face with patients during the early days of the pandemic. This legislation allows them to gain continuing education throughout the licensing cycle. It also helps to build the pipeline by making training for our next generation of Respiratory Therapists efficient.

Together, these bills are steps forward in getting things done for our healthcare workers and residents, ensuring better support, protection, and education for all. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to work hard for our community!

Last night, I had the incredible honor of joining women entrepreneurs, small business owners, Michigan Women Forward supporters, and Carolyn Cassin, President and CEO, for their Women of Achievement & Courage Awards dinner, celebrating extraordinary women leaders who’ve made an impact in community service.

MWF is a phenomenal organization uplifting women entrepreneurs, and championing women-owned businesses. Their unwavering dedication to empowering women, especially women of color, with the tools to build and sustain successful businesses, is truly remarkable. Thier commitment fuels innovation, fosters economic growth, and transforms communities, paving the way for a brighter future for Michigan.

I also attended conference sessions that included addressing our housing crisis, and supporting entrepreneurialship.

Thank you to the Detroit Regional Chamber members and staff who did an amazing job organizing this event!

Today, we honor the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten. As we celebrate this weekend with loved ones, may we remember the freedom that we hold dear was paid for with the lives of those who answered the call to serve.

Let us take a moment to reflect on their heroism and express our deepest gratitude. May their legacy inspire us to live with the same spirit of bravery and commitment to our nation.

This morning, I was honored to deliver an AED that was generously donated by the NFL to Warren Woods Tower High School.

Public Acts 36-37 of 2024 requires that schools across Michigan have cardiac emergency response plans available, and that automated external defibrillators (AED) are readily available on school campuses beginning with the 2025-26 school year.

I’m grateful to my colleagues, and to Governor Gretchen Whitmer for signing this legislation into law earlier this year.

This AED is a life savings device that will further ensure the health and safety of our children.

While I hope that the school never has to use this device, in the event of an emergency, you can count on it being here.

State Rep. Mai Xiong delivers AED to Warren Woods Tower High School and shared the following:

“As parents, administers, staff, and public servants, our job is to keep our children safe, in our homes and in our schools.

I’m pleased to share that earlier this year, my colleagues in the state legislature passed House Bills 5527 and 5528, now known as Public Acts 36-37 of 2024, to ensure schools across Michigan have cardiac emergency response plans available, beginning with the 2025-26 school year. This Act requires that automated external defibrillators (AED) are readily available on school campuses and in athletic facilities, and that training is provided to school staff, and certification in CPR, and training in the use of AEDs for coaches.

I’m grateful to my colleagues, and to Governor Gretchen Whitmer for signing this legislation into law.

This law ensures that our children have the life-saving devices, if they need, while equipping our schools with the tools to assist them.

Today, I’m so honored to have the opportunity to deliver this AED that was generously donated by the NFL, to Warren Woods Tower High School.

This life savings device will further ensure the health and safety of our children.

While I hope that the school never has to use this device, in the event of an emergency, you can count on it being here.”
