Ibogaine, a supposed “dangerous drug,” or ancient psychedelic medicine with potential to become the future of addiction healing?

Iboga is an African jungle shrub used by the Bwiti practitioners for centuries. In small doses it causes stimulating effects but in higher dosages, it’s highly psychedelic, with the inner journey going for as long as 24 to 96 hours.

In recent years it has been scientifically proven that its main alkaloid called Ibogaine has ground breaking results when it comes to healing addictions, even the most difficult: opioid, without difficult withdrawal effects.

The Iboga initiation rite of the Bwiti involves the whole tribe coming to assist the initiated in the journey to the after world, to meet the ancestors and heal the soul. The polyrhythm music played on the traditional handmade instruments helps to activate the Theta brainwaves and guide the experience, just like the Amazonian icaros in the Ayahuasca ceremony. By collectively singing the tribe anchors the soul of the initiated in the physical realm, so he can experience the life-changing Near Death Experience and still come back. Some however, do not come back and stay in 'the village of the dead'.

Considering the highest levels of opioid addiction in the western world, there's a growing need for enabling Iboga-based therapies, which for many it may be the last resort for healing.

Why is this shrub used traditionally for hundreds of years still illegal in many countries? Is it because of the fatal risks or do its healing qualities pose a threat to big pharmaceutical financial interests?

It’s ridiculous to think that it was legal to engage in a sport where you can get kicked in the head, but it was illegal to use cannabis.

I’m happy fighters have one less thing to worry about and can use cannabis as they choose to.
