The deal was to pass the microwave through a family member for delivery. Yet, when it arrived, the item was not the new microwave promised but an old one. It turned out, the family member handling delivery swapped it, taking the new one for themselves. After we discovered this, I advised my mom to either receive what she paid for or get her money back. A deal is a deal and she didn't get what was promised. In principle, I thought what the intervening family did was wrong and if my mother let it slide, they would deem her as the family member they could take advantage of. My mother disagreed. An intended recipient must receive a message, then decode and interpret it according to their values and experiences in order for communication to take place. The problem is that people have different values and experiences, so communication can break down at this point. We often get upset when people do the following to us: *Lie to us *Break their promises to us *Don't keep their word to us *Don't honor their agreements with us *Get promoted over us *Are not faithful to us Etc., etc. A reasonable person that is honest and fair would expect the same in return, but this is not always the case. However, whether others are honorable, fair, or keep their word should not affect if you are fair or honest. If your compass always points due North, keep it that way. Others' behavior should not detour you if you are an honorable, fair person.

QUALITY CONTROL IS CRUCIAL I once started a new job for a company that manufactured goods that were sold at retail stores. As I visited retail locations for the 1st time, I witnessed almost all of the displays that carried our products were not hygienic and were in a state of utter chaos. It was clear that merchandisers were not performing their duties. I quickly deduced it would have taken years to accumulate the disrepair. I wondered how this could happen. After only a few weeks, it became clear how: There were no Quality Control procedures in place. Merchandisers would submit false reports claiming all displays were impeccable. However, their ruse could've been discovered if someone had checked their work. As Executives, it is our responsibility to develop systems and policies, then train and aid our employees with the proper tools to be successful. In addition, another part of our responsibility is Quality Control. We should be developing procedures that conduct thermometer tests to make sure our systems are working, and then make the necessary adjustments to obtain effectiveness and efficiency. PROMOTIONAL GROCERY SECRETS REVEALED The other day we visited a grocery store that had the following promotion: buy 4 packages of Frozen Food for $10. The regular retail price for 1 package of Frozen Food was $3.00. With the promotion, the average price was $2.50, saving 50 cents per unit. If consumers participated in the promotion they walked away with a sense of value. Moreover, they may have visited the store specifically for that promotion and feel a sense of accomplishment when redeeming it. Score for the consumer! But it is also a score for the Grocer for 2 main reasons: 1) The grocer makes more total gross profit by selling 4 of the items at a discount than by selling merely 1 item at full price. & 2) If consumers were drawn into the grocery store due to the promotion, they will likely purchase other items while in the store, increasing the total dollars spent during their visit. So it's a win-win for both parties. As consumers though, keep in mind you don't necessarily have to buy the total number of units proposed in the offer to receive the discounted price per unit. Unless the promotion specifically says YOU MUST BUY X # of units, you can buy as few units as you like at the discounted price (in this case $2.50). ALWAYS PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD I recently chatted with a colleague who I coached and mentored when I was 18 and he was 14. Weโ€™ve only spoken sparingly since that time throughout the years. He told me heโ€™s observed my activities throughout the years. How I worked part-time at a young age. How I played College Football. How I graduated from College. How I became a working professional. How I became an expert in my field. How Iโ€™ve donated time and resources to help those in need. Etc., etc I have to admit I was surprised. I didnโ€™t realize he was watching me.
