Free VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) seem like a great way to save a few bucks, but they can be dangerous. 😳

Free VPN services are typically not very secure. Since the software company isn’t collecting a fee from you to pay employees to keep up with updating the software, it often doesn’t provide adequate protection.

Some of these free versions can also contain malware. Scammers can set these up, trying to take advantage of business owners looking to cut costs. 👎

They can also collect and sell your private data, which is how they keep up with any updates.

The best thing to do is just not risk it and opt for a paid version. We can help you choose the right one for your business.

You should be regularly updating and refreshing your employees on the dangers and best practices associated with cybersecurity.

Most data breaches happen because of human error.

In today’s post, there are 5 e-mail threats that everyone in your organization needs to be aware of.

If you’re not sure if they know what these are or what to do when they come across one, we can help.

When we do Security Risk Assessment or Pe*******on Tests, we almost always find a few common vulnerabilities, and they are ALL dangerous to your business.

Here are the top 5 we see:

1. Unpatched systems (holes in your security that hackers can use to get in your network and infect your system)

2. Weak authentication (no extra security processes like multi-factor authentication to keep you secure if someone figures out a password)

3. Lack of access controls (you don’t have master control over your software or devices)

4. Insufficient logging and monitoring (not all devices are being constantly monitored for suspicious activity)

5. Weak mobile device security (or worse, personal devices that are unprotected are used to access work documents)

Failing to fix any one of these could result in a costly data breach. Make sure your organization is SECURE.

Do you wish you had better IT service, but the thought of switching providers and getting everything moved over to a new system seems like a headache and a half?

We get it. While our team handles a lot of the work on the back end to make things easier for our clients, here is a 7-step checklist to make the transition smoother for you.

1. Schedule a hand-off meeting between the old and new companies.

2. Set firm milestones and deadlines with corresponding payment due dates.

3. Request an admin login and password list for all equipment, programs, etc.

4. Request a full inventory of all software licenses, equipment, etc.

5. Get a network diagram that maps out all IP addresses.

6. Get a new and TESTED backup recovery system.

7. Do not sign off or pay the new company until all of these items are acknowledged. You do not want to lose anything!

Cost reduction has become an important part of most business owners’ 2024 strategic plan.

Unfortunately, most cost cuts come with their own set of complications. 😐

👉🏻One way to reduce costs without compromising productivity is by leveraging cloud computing.

Leveraging the cloud can help limit your need for expensive hardware or software licenses.

Using this solution, you only pay for the resources you actively use and have the flexibility to scale up or down as needed.

Plus, with a pay-as-you-go system, you have better control of your budget and resources!

Creating a company-wide file naming system is a great way to stay organized, but it is also an important cybersecurity tactic.

When you have a distinct naming system that everyone in the organization knows and uses, you’ll be able to easily track documents so nothing is duplicated or lost, and you can track who has access to what files.

This can help reduce the chances of confidential files falling into the wrong hands.

If you need help creating a collaborative, secure workspace for your employees, let’s talk.

🚨 Cyber Alert for TeamViewer Users

Attention TeamViewer users!
SYN Cyber advises caution with TeamViewer remote desktop use due to a recent incident impacting their corporate IT environment. Although there's no evidence that customer data or product environments are affected, the situation is evolving.

🔍 Incident Details:
On June 26, 2024, TeamViewer detected irregularities in their internal IT systems. They swiftly activated response protocols and engaged cybersecurity experts to investigate and remediate the issue.

Key points from TeamViewer's statement:
- No evidence suggests the product environment or customer data is compromised.
- Investigations are ongoing to ensure system integrity.
- Continuous updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

💡 SYN Cyber Tip: Only allow RDP software on your network if it's absolutely necessary for business continuity. RDP software can create security vulnerabilities, enabling threat actors to access your internal network and move laterally if already inside.

⚠️ APT Group Involvement:
NCC Group reported a significant compromise by an APT group, likely linked to APT29 (associated with Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service). This group is known for cyberespionage, including recent breaches of high-profile targets.

For detailed updates, stay tuned to TeamViewer’s Trust Center and follow best practices to secure your remote access tools.

Stay safe and vigilant! 🛡️
