Let’s talk about birthing your ✨placenta✨

Your placenta is birthed anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes after birth. During this time your baby is still attached to their cord getting all those great benefits from delayed cord clamping. This is standard practice in my midwifery care.

Did you know you can deliver your own placenta without help if you so choose? Otherwise, once your placenta shows signs of being ready to be born, I can simply help guide it out, and make sure no membranes are left behind.

Delivering the placenta feels like a relief to most people. It is not painful.

When looking at the placenta, I will look for any variations in the insertion of the cord, abnormalities, etc. I will look at the maternal side to make sure there isn’t any pieces missing, and the cord, to make sure there are 3 vessels!

I always make sure to give you a “tour” of your placenta as well! It’s a pretty amazing thing to get to see.

☀️Placenta Art ☀️

It all started at 28 weeks, I was diagnosed with Cholestasis of pregnancy, my bile acid number was 74, I went on a liver glow tincture and tried everything in the book to control the itching. I had blood work done every week to make sure it wasn’t getting worse and my numbers had gone down again until I was 35.5 and they jumped back up to 14. Because we weren’t sure how fast that number was going to climb my midwife wanted to do a membrane sweep. When I went for the membrane sweep I had already taken two doses of Cohosh, so I was dilated to 5 that could stretch to a 6. This was the night of February 3rd. My midwife said that if I didn’t spontaneously go into labor that night to take a castor oil cocktail in the morning and let them know when I drank it. I drank the cocktail at about 9am February 4th and immediately had bowel irritation, contractions started getting consistent at 10am. By 2 I was in rip roaring labor.

One year ago I had my first homebirth ❤️ just reminiscing on the day, and thought I’d share some of my favorite photos from this beautiful day where we welcome our third baby. ❤️

To all my clients that chose me to stand beside them during this precious time in their lives. I thank you. It’s an honor and a privelage to serve this community, to support families, and hold mothers.

I started this year off by having my own baby, so I was on maternity leave for a good chunk of it! I’m excited to see what the next year holds for me, and hopefully finish all my phases towards becoming a cpm ❤️ I got to assist at 17 births this year, and that was super exciting as I learn something new at each birth. Each mother and baby have their own stories, and I’m grateful to have walked beside so many powerful women this year.

Tiniest little cord. Sometimes drs don’t leave me much to work with, and this is my smallest cord keepsake to date. But is awfully precious 😍

Mom only had a one hour long active labor, which was super intense.

Mama was a total rockstar, and Daddy was such a strong support. One of the best birth partners I’ve ever seen.

Beautiful cord with a true knot

Early Novemeber second sweet baby M made her way into the world fast and furious.

This mama did so much inner work, to achieve her Hbac. Mama caught her own baby, in the calm, and peace of her own home. Dad was right by her side the whole time, and they made a beautiful team.

What a redemptive birth this beautiful vbac was.
