Beautiful!
how powerful...❤️
"She sat at the back
and they said she was shy,
she led from the front
and they hated her pride.
They asked her advice
and then questioned
her guidance.
They branded her loud
then were shocked by her
silence.
When she shared no ambition
they said it was sad
so she told them her dreams
and they said she was mad.
They told her they'd listen
then covered their ears
and gave her a hug
whilst they laughed at her
fears.
And she listened to all of it
thinking she should
be the girl they told her to be
best as she could.
But one day she asked
what was best for herself
instead of trying to please
everyone else.
So she walked to the forest
and stood with the trees,
she heard the wind whisper
and dance with the leaves.
And she spoke to the willow,
the elm and the pine
and she told them what
she'd been told,
time after time.
She told them she never
felt nearly enough
she was either too little,
or far, far too much.
Too loud or too quiet,
too fierce or too weak,
too wise or too foolish,
too bold, or too meek.
Then she found a small clearing
surrounded by firs
and she stopped and she heard
what the trees said to her.
And she sat there for hours
not wanting to leave -
for the forest said nothing,
it just let her breathe."

Does your workspace look like A or B? I think most of us want the Pinterest-ready, space on the right, but a lot of the time, it looks like what's pictured on the left. And that's okay! The creative process doesn't always need to be neat or pretty 😉 What do you think?

"Art is not always about pretty things. It's about who we are, what happened to us and how our lives are affected." - Elizabeth Broun

A few days ago someone messaged me asking for advice. They had mentioned that the skill level of others around them could be daunting at times and I wanted to remind them that this is all about YOUR personal expression. Your success comes on your own terms whether that be something monetary or just fulfilling for your soul, keep creating and being true to yourself.

Emmy-winner has tremendous talent when it comes to conjuring a feeling of soul-soaring wonder through his paintings, animation, sculptures, books, public art installations and other channels for self-expression. In so doing, he celebrates form: of the human body, of shapes and lines that coalesce into lyrical masses, of the vastness of the cosmos and the questions it calls us to.
Mike's is a fantastic example of an awareness funnel set up. Fans and fellow art-lovers can easily find him on social media by searching for his name. His channels correctly hold a link to his website, which in turn makes it easy to purchase his art or learn more about the artist.

You could be the most talented artist in all the world, but if you don’t have the right approach, you’ll never get the exposure you desire.
1. Extensively research galleries, and most specifically - locations audience, and best ways to contact directly.
2. Make your messages count. When you email for the first time, make sure it's short, sweet, and professional. A common mistake is to include too much info. Ideally, include a short confident introduction and links to your portfolio & social.
3. Look for open calls
Often galleries will hold open calls. You can apply for them to be featured, but knowing to look for them is the key to getting your foot in the door.
4. Build relationships and network
Social media is an excellent way to get connected to the people who will hopefully feature your work. You’ll want to build a network of these people. They’re always looking for new talent and if your work really speaks to them, they’ll be among the first to compliment it. Go to events too, even if your work isn’t featured to create connections. You may find your next mentor who can help steer you in the right direction.

Mark Grotjahn is an American artist best known for his abstract paintings which strike a complex dialogue with the work of Russian Constructivist Kazimir Malevich Art, Color Field painter Barnett Newman, and Op Art painter Bridget Riley.
Grotjahn’s work often explores the vanishing point of perspective, which he uses as a catalyst to create expressive and brightly colored paintings.
His works are presently held in the collections of the Hammer Museum, MoMA The Museum of Modern Art, the Stedelijk, Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, and Walker Art Center, among others.

In one of his most important works from the 1990s, (Green), Paul McCarthy creates a life-size comic figure to explore the relationship between modern culture, consumerism, and innocence. The allegories of a beloved and immediately recognizable cast of characters have been subtly changed or adulterated to produce unsettling and unnerving works.
Tomato Head (Green) plays on the name and appearance of the iconic children’s toy Mr. Potato Head. McCarthy’s human figure with an enlarged cartoonish tomato as a head transforms the notion of a children’s toy into a sinister work of art that perturbs certain aspects of American culture.

Though he might contest it, Conceptual artist , who moved to Los Angeles in 1956 to attend the Chouinard Art Institute, is one of the artists most associated with the visual language of the West Coast.
Burning Gas Station (1965–66), an oil-and-graphite work on canvas which sold in 2007 for $6.9M at Christie’s New York, depicts a gas station with flames shooting out from the roof and gas pumps. It could be anywhere in the US, but it certainly evokes the car culture, natural disasters, and “burning” ambition peculiar to the City of Dreams.

My Post-It Note
Between installations, openings, and events, I found that I had little time to focus on what really mattered in my life. So many times artists would approach me after a speaking engagement or at the gallery, and I would find that my time was always cut short by a phone call or the next meeting. My grandmother said it best in her poem:
My days are a series of Post-its
Taped to my bathroom wall
“It’s Aunt Em’s birthday tomorrow—
Be sure to give her a call.”
“Plan to scrub the kitchen”
It’s work that is long overdue
“How about all those letters”
On your desk the past week or two.
“Be sure to get out your checkbook
And pay all those pesky bills”
And when you get finished with that chore
There’s always the windowsills.
I’d rather be sketching or painting
Or writing a poem or two
Or tickling the keys on the ivory
There’s so many “fun” things to do.
But now that my day is over
I am sure that you will agree
I was a slave to my Post-its
There just was no time left for “me.”
So, my hope is that Artist’s Road Trip To Success will make up for all of the lost time when I was swimming in the Post-it notes instead of helping those around me.
