Toric contact lenses are designed for people with astigmatism, a condition that causes blurry vision due to an unevenly shaped cornea or lens. Unlike regular, spherical contact lenses, toric lenses are shaped like a donut slice. This special shape allows them to have different focusing powers in different zones, counteracting the uneven curvature in your eye and providing clear vision.
If you think you might have astigmatism and could benefit from toric lenses, consult with your eye doctor for a proper diagnosis and fitting. ๐
Want to keep your eyes healthy and reduce your risk of cataracts? Here are some simple tips:
Wear sunglasses and hats with brims to shield your eyes from harmful UV rays.
Use safety glasses during activities that could injure your eyes.
Smoking increases cataract risk. If you're ready to quit, free resources are available to help!
Eat a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, nuts, and whole grains.
By following these steps, you can take proactive steps towards maintaining good eye health and potentially delaying cataracts. Remember, regular eye exams are also crucial for early detection and treatment.
Protect your precious sight! June is Cataract Awareness Month. Schedule an eye exam and discuss cataracts with your eye doctor.
Corneal scars can affect your vision, but treatments are available! Your eye doctor will recommend the best option based on the severity of scarring. Here's a quick rundown:
Laser Surgery (PTK): Targets mild scars on the cornea's surface with a laser.
Corneal Transplant: Replaces damaged cornea with healthy donor tissue in various techniques.
Artificial Cornea: Uses synthetic materials (sometimes with donor tissue) for corneal replacement when transplants aren't ideal.
Talk to your eye doctor! They'll assess your specific case and recommend the most suitable treatment to restore your vision.

Ortho-K lenses come at a premium compared to standard contacts for a few reasons:
These lenses are specially designed for your individual eye shape, requiring more time and expertise.
Ensuring a perfect fit and comfortable wear necessitates high-quality, breathable materials.
Fitting involves thorough eye examinations and precise corneal curvature measurements.
But the benefits may outweigh the cost:
No more glasses or daily contacts needed!
Ortho-K might help slow down nearsightedness progression in children.
Many patients find the convenience and potential long-term benefits of Ortho-K justify the investment.
Contact lenses don't normally cause eye allergies, but they can sometimes exacerbate symptoms. They can also attract or cling to tiny particles of dust or pollen, which may trigger an allergic response. Avoid wearing them during allergy season to minimize discomfort if you are susceptible to eye allergies. Make sure to schedule your eye exam with The Contact Lens Institute of Nevada this allergy season to keep your eyes feeling fresh and healthy.

Slows down nearsightedness progression: Studies show Ortho-K might help manage myopia in children.
Safe for children: Similar safety profile to regular soft contact lenses.
Ask your eye doctor if Ortho-K is right for your child!

While keratoconus can cause the cornea to thin and distort, leading to blurry vision, it doesn't automatically mean a corneal transplant is your future. Here's some good news:
Catching keratoconus early allows for effective treatment options that can prevent the need for a transplant altogether.
Techniques like corneal cross-linking can strengthen the cornea and halt its progression.

These advancements mean many keratoconus patients can manage their condition successfully without needing a transplant. If you're concerned about keratoconus, schedule a regular eye exam to discuss the best course of action for you.

Doctors of optometry play an important role in educating patients on safe contact lens use, says the CDC in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report in August 2019, which recommends that patient communications be โeasy to understand, specific, use repetition, minimize jargonโ and are checked for patientsโ understanding of the information.
And in a recent study, researchers concluded that contact lens wearers (CLWs) need information that is accurate and that they can understand in order to ultimately prevent complications from risky hygiene.
โMost CL-related complications occur due to noncompliance with recommendations and CL care, including improper cleaning and disinfection, using the CL for more than the recommended period, incorrect use of the solution, and inadequate handwashing,โ say the authors of โDetermining the information needs of contact lens wearers for better education and more support: a qualitative studyโ published online the Sept. 7. 2021 in BMC Ophthalmology.
โTo do proper CL care and maintenance, CLWs need adequate knowledge and awareness to minimize or prevent complications,โ they continue. โAcquiring relevant information is an important aspect of care and support for CLWs that enable them to have greater control over their self-care. Therefore, CLWs should be trainedโboth at the beginning of CL use and periodic throughout CL wearingโto increase their knowledge, modify their behavior and enhance their motivation about CL care and hygiene.โ

For Sjรถgrenโs patients, inflammation of tear-secreting glands reduces tear production, resulting in chronic dry eye. In addition, changes in the composition of tears contribute to dry eye. In people with dry eye, thin spots in the tear film may appear and the tears no longer adequately protect and support the health of ocular surface tissues.
In Sjรถgren's, a patient's white blood cells mistakenly invade tear and saliva-producing glands, causing inflammation and reducing secretion. The age of onset for Sjรถgren's is typically in the 40s, although many patients are being diagnosed at a younger age as education about Sjรถgren's increases.
Treatment for dry eye depends on its causes and severity, so it is essential to consult an eye care professional for proper diagnosis and treatment. Tests may be conducted to assess tear production, stability, and distribution. The Sjรถgren's Foundation has developed clinical practice guidelines for treating dry eye in Sjรถgren's syndrome. Treatment options include over-the-counter artificial tears, punctal occlusion, and prescription medications like Restasisยฎ, Xiidraยฎ, and CEQUAโข. Corticosteroids may be prescribed for acute inflammation, but their use should be limited due to potential side effects.
