STONES DETERMINED TO BE PART OF CITY FUTURE

John Stones is determined to be at the forefront of Manchester City's continuing push for glory - and believes his team are still the best around.

The England defender is convinced City remain the best team in the country despite surrendering their Premier League crown to Liverpool after two successive triumphs.

They will hope to prove their enduring class as they bid to retain the FA Cup and win the Champions League for the first time.

After a season affected by form and fitness problems, Stones is anxious to be part of it.

POGBA ‘ENJOYING’ MAN UTD FOOTBALL

Paul Pogba says he is enjoying playing in Manchester United’s reinvigorated side following his return from injury.

The World Cup winner has formed a promising midfield partnership with new signing Bruno Fernandes since the Premier League resumed following lockdown.

Prior to the stoppage in the season, Pogba had made just two appearances for United since September due to an ankle problem, an absence that fuelled speculation of a departure from Old Trafford.

“You can tell that the team is improving a lot,” the 27-year-old told United Review. “We play more as a team than we did before, we enjoy it even more, we defend together, we attack together, and this team is stronger as well.

“From behind I just enjoy it. I’m enjoying just watching Bruno, [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial and Mason [Greenwood], who all played the last game, and seeing them score goals. You just keep applauding, it’s beautiful… they make me enjoy football every time.”

REAL BETIS APPOINT PELLEGRINI

Real Betis have appointed former Real Madrid and Manchester City coach Manuel Pellegrini as their manager from next season on a three-year contract, the La Liga side said on Thursday.

Pellegrini, who won the Premier League with City in 2013-14 as well as two League Cups, returns to Spain where he had successful spells with Villarreal and Malaga.

The Chilean, 66, led Villarreal to the 2006 Champions League semi-finals and led Malaga into Europe’s premier club competition for the first time in 2012, leading them to the quarter-finals a year later.

"Real Betis has signed Chilean manager Manuel Pellegrini to take up the reins of the first team next season. The contract between Pellegrini and the club is until June 2023," the club said in a statement.

LUIZ COMMITS TO ASTON VILLA

Aston Villa have spent £145m over the last year - second only to Real Madrid across Europe and beyond over the past two transfer windows - but the club were in need of bodies having largely relied on loan signings to gain promotion.

That said, very few of those arrivals have had the same impact as Douglas Luiz, whose 37 appearances in all competitions is more than any other Villa player this term. Another five games will determine the club's fate for next season, but Luiz appears destined for a bright future.

"I have a four-year contract with Aston Villa, and my objective is to continue here, and to make history with the club that opened the door for me," he told Sky Sports. "Right now, my goal is to drag this team out of trouble, and to keep them in the Premier League.

"I'm not thinking of anything other than winning games for this club."

MOWBRAY WANTS TO SIGN TOSIN

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray admits he would “love” to have Man City’s Tosin Adarabioyo back at the club next season, but admits it’s unlikely as they couldn’t afford to buy him in “a million years.”

The 22 year-old central defender has impressed during his season-long loan, playing 33 matches for Rovers and scoring three goals.
Instead Mowbray believes Adarabioyo will end up in the Premier League or even abroad.

“We would love to have him, I think it’s a bit more complicated than that," he told Sky Sports.

"I think first and foremost, the boy in his career and his advisors would expect now for him to be moving on and trying to nail down his career in the Premier League.

"If that’s not going to be at Man City, and it’s not for me to say whether it is or it isn’t, we would like to think he could go to the Premier League and be in a squad somewhere, or he can go to La Liga or to Bundesliga and get his career going.”

He spent the first half of last season on loan at Championship side Queen of the South.

MORSY WANTED BY SIX CHAMPIONSHIP CLUBS

Six Championship clubs have already expressed an interest in signing Wigan Athletic captain Sam Morsy this summer.

The Egypt international is one of a number of players that Wigan are expected to sell to raise the funds needed to save the club.

Last summer he was valued at around £2m however Wigan’s plight, plus the fact that Morsy will be entering into the final year of his contract, could mean that the midfielder is available for significantly less.

DUNN NAMED BARROW BOSS

Former Blackburn, Birmingham and England midfielder David Dunn has been named manager of Football League new boys Barrow.

The 40-year-old replaces Ian Evatt, who guided Barrow to promotion from the National League before leaving to take over at Bolton.
Dunn has quit his role as first-team coach at Blackpool to take his first managerial role, agreeing a two-year contract at Holker Street.
Barrow chairman Paul Hornby told the club website: "As soon as we knew David was available and wanted the position we made him our number one target. He is an extremely talented coach and ticked all the boxes with the owners.

"His football philosophy and style of play is completely suited to how we are set up and he also knows a number of our players, which met our requirements for a seamless transition.

"After meeting David we knew he would be the man to take the club onto the next level."

PEP: SILVA CAN PLAY ANYWHERE

Pep Guardiola claimed David Silva could still play anywhere as he saluted a masterful display in Manchester City's 5-0 thrashing of Newcastle on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old playmaker, who is leaving the club at the end of the season after a decade's outstanding service, starred with a goal and two assists as the Magpies were outclassed at the Etihad Stadium.

Silva teed up Gabriel Jesus to begin the rout, curled home a brilliant free-kick for the fourth and then played in Raheem Sterling to wrap up the scoring in a one-sided Premier League contest.

Unfortunately for the Spaniard there were no fans in the ground to appreciate his performance, but Guardiola is determined a fitting tribute will be paid to Silva's when the time is right.

The City manager said: "What we want is, when people come back to the Etihad Stadium, to do a farewell game for him, and to say hi to one of the legends of the club.

"When we need to play in small spaces he is maybe the best. Moving between the lines I have never seen someone like him.

"He came back from lockdown in incredible top form and with incredible rhythm. Of course if he decides to play, he can play anywhere. There are no doubts about this."

OLE HOPEFUL OVER POGBA CONTRACT

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hopeful Paul Pogba will sign a new Manchester United contract and play an important role in the club's future success.

Pogba has long been linked with a move to Real Madrid or former side Juventus, and even admitted himself last year that he was looking for a "new challenge" in his career.

The France World Cup winner made just eight appearances in all competitions during an injury-hit season before the coronavirus lockdown, but his return to fitness and form since football resumed last month has sparked hope among many supporters that he could stay at United beyond the current campaign.

"I can't comment on discussions between players and the club but of course we want to keep the best players," Solskjaer said.

"We want to build a squad for the future and Scott and Nemanja, they're in similar positions but in different stages of their careers - one at the start and one really experienced one.

"We also need players in that mid-range group so hopefully we can do something. I know that since Paul came back from injury he's looking better and better. He's just enjoying his football and let's see where it takes us."

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly drawing up plans should Jadon Sancho depart for Manchester United this summer.

The Bundesliga club want at least £100m for the forward, but United are reluctant to spend above £70m on the target this summer.

"If Jadon were to leave, we would once again be active in strengthening our attack," sports director Michael Zorc told Kicker. "There are certainly one or two players we have our sights on."

Arsenal Women have completed the signing of Australia goalkeeper Lydia Williams from Melbourne City.

Williams has made 88 appearances for the Matildas and has twice been named Australia's Women's Footballer of the Year.

The 32-year-old becomes Arsenal's second signing of the summer, following last week's arrival of fellow Australian Steph Catley, who also joined from Melbourne City.

"To be given an opportunity to come over and play with some of the best players in the world is really exciting," Williams told Arsenal.com. "I remember watching Arsenal as a young kid, so It's amazing to be a part of this team. I can't wait to meet all of my team-mates."

'ARSENAL REBUILD WON'T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT'

Kieran Tierney has praised head coach Mikel Arteta for improving Arsenal’s fortunes – but has warned supporters there is no quick-fix.

The Gunners drew 1-1 at home to Leicester on Tuesday, conceding a late Jamie Vardy equaliser having been reduced to 10 men following Eddie Nketiah’s red card. But for large periods of the game, Arsenal played some of their best football of recent times and should had added to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s opening goal to seal a fourth straight Premier League win.

Back-to-back defeats following the resumption of the season threatened to derail the good work Arteta was putting in place before lockdown, when his side had lost just one of 13 games across all competitions. Since Arteta’s appointment in December, only Liverpool and Manchester City have taken more points than Arsenal in 2020 – with Tierney happy to give the credit to his manager.

“The boss has been brilliant,” he said. “I think we had a period to work closely and obviously coming back we had a few weeks to work without games. We did that, we worked hard every day and continued into the games – the first few results we got weren’t ideal but we are building something here and it isn’t going to happen overnight. I think everybody can see we are progressing well, we’ve still got a long way to go but we are doing all we can, listening to everything he says and we all believe.”

CHELSEA FAVOURITES FOR HAVERTZ, BUT £90M TOO MUCH?

Chelsea are the favourites to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen but they are not willing to pay the £90m asking price.

Havertz wants to leave Leverkusen this summer and the German club are prepared to let him go because he has only two years remaining on his contract and they have failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Leverkusen value Havertz at €100m (£90m) but his representatives are hopeful a deal can be structured with bonus payments and add-ons which would satisfy all parties.

Norwich City will demand up to £50m if they are to lose their highly-rated central defender Ben Godfrey.

German clubs Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are among those keen to sign the England U21 international, with the Canaries looking almost certain to be relegated from the Premier League.

Norwich believe the 22-year old will become an England first-team regular in the future and are adamant, therefore, that he will not leave on the cheap if they do indeed slide back into the Championship.

PEP CASTS DOUBT OVER STONES FUTURE

Pep Guardiola has cast doubt over England defender John Stones' future at Manchester City.

Guardiola still wants to continue working with the 26-year-old but, after another campaign dogged by form and fitness issues, he does not appear to be offering the same solid guarantee.

"What I want is the best for him and at the end of the season we are going to speak about what is going to happen, because sometimes my wish is not the wish of the players, or the wish for the situation of the club.

"I am honest with them and the moment I will feel - not with John but any player - if we have to change we are going to tell them."

Stones has recently been linked with a move back to former club Everton.

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has once again played down the possibility of him being reunited with Lionel Messi at the Etihad.

When pressed on transfer targets and the possibility of seeking reinforcements at centre-back, Guardiola repeated: "At the end of the season. We still have incredible targets to fight for."

ESPIRITO SANTO RESPONDS TO JIMENEZ COMMENTS

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo refused to be riled after Mexico manager Gerardo Martino said Raul Jimenez should join Manchester United in the future.

The forward's international boss believes Jimenez would be better off moving to Old Trafford over Juventus.

Jimenez has scored 24 times in all competitions this season to fire Wolves into sixth in the Premier League and the last 16 of the Europa League.

He has been linked with a move away from Molineux but, ahead of Wednesday's trip to Sheffield United, Nuno remained relaxed about Martino's comments.

He said: "It's not an issue for us, we have a competition and a game to play. We have a lot of things in front of us. It's not the moment to think about anything else. I'm sure Raul is totally, 100 per cent focused on what he has to do at Wolves.

"They are things which you can't control, it's up to you to decide if you pay attention or not. I admire Tata (Martino), he is a big manager, and honestly it doesn't distract us."

HASENHUTTL: NO FORSTER DECISION

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl admitted some of his loaned players want a more lasting decision on their futures as he addressed Celtic’s pursuit of Fraser Forster.

Saints winger Mohamed Elyounoussi agreed a second season-long loan deal with the Scottish champions this week, but Forster’s future is less certain after shining on loan with Neil Lennon’s men.

Celtic were hoping to sign the 32-year-old for another season but the goalkeeper, who has two years left on his St Mary’s contract, appears to be seeking a more settled resolution.

“We have not decided what we do next season with our plans in this direction,” Hasenhuttl said when asked about Forster. “Of our loan players, some did a very good job there and it’s also clear that loan players don’t want to go again on loan.

“Normally they want to go permanently somewhere, and we will find the right solution for every player in the summer. When the right moment is to discuss it, then we do it.”

SIGNING OF THE SEASON?

Newcastle flier Allan Saint-Maximin could be the buy of the season after lighting up the Premier League on its return from lockdown.

That is the view of Magpies head coach Steve Bruce, who has seen the Frenchman, a £16million summer signing from Nice, hit top form in recent weeks.

Bruce said: “When you’re looking at the levels of money we bought him for, he is arguably the best pound-for-pound signing in the Premier League. You show me another better.

“When you look at the money being spent pre-lockdown – I don’t think we will see that sort of money being spent after lockdown, not for a long while – but what he has produced this season, we have probably got the buy of the season.”

CHELSEA STEP UP HAVERTZ CHASE

Chelsea are ready to press ahead with plans to sign Kai Havertz after Bayer Leverkusen’s season ended, reports The Guardian.

The 21-year-old Germany international has been identified by Blues boss Frank Lampard, who is keen to beat the likes of Real Madrid to his signature.

Havertz was part of the Leverkusen side that lost the German Cup final to Bayern Munich on Saturday in what could prove to be his final appearance for the club.

Leverkusen’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League means Havertz is now expected to leave this summer, and it’s claimed he would be open to a move to Stamford Bridge.

DECLAN RICE IN DEFENCE?

Chelsea have identified West Ham midfielder Declan Rice as a possible defensive reinforcement, according to The Times.

Frank Lampard is keen to strengthen his defensive options at Stamford Bridge this summer and believes Rice, who came through the ranks at West Ham as a centre-back, could fit the bill.

Rice is under contract at the London Stadium until the summer of 2024 and the Hammers have no intention of losing the 21-year-old, although the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic could force them to sell players.

Juventus and Inter Milan are reportedly keen on bringing Lacazette to Italy, while Atletico Madrid want to bring him to Spain.

It's claimed Atletico could be open to a part exchange deal for Lacazette, with reported Arsenal target Thomas Partey potentially available.
