There are not many shotguns intended for the defensive use market that come with chokes these days. For the ones that do though, it can increase the size of the performance envelope if choke/load selection is tweaked to maximize potential. Unfortunately, this requires experimentation to figure out the right combo, but surely we are not going to complain about having an excuse to shoot our guns more.

Usually, the easy button answer to buckshot load selection is to just use Federal Flite Control loads or Hornady Versa-Tite loads combined with a cylinder bore choke. Before 2020, that was easy to say, and easy to do. Post 2020 (yes, that is how we refer to the world now 😔) it can be difficult to find FFC, and even harder to find the Hornady loads with the Versa-Tite wad. On the other hand, I have been able to drive down to the local shop and buy a 25 round box of Fiocchi buckshot for the past two months. Having a gun that allows me to stretch the capability of an otherwise unremarkable buckshot load has been of great value lately.

We can also see an example of “over choking” with these three patterns. As choke constriction increases, pellet deformation can also increase. Pellet deformation is what causes larger and/or erratic patterns. Usually this manifest as shown in the modified choke pattern below. A tight cluster, with a few stray pellets further away. This type of pattern is very unpredictable, and no bueno for maintaining pellet accountability.

In mid-March, one of our K-9's was attempting to apprehend a dangerous felon who was hiding in a pond. The suspect grabbed the K-9's head and shoved it under water in an attempt to drown the dog. Fortunately, the K-9 wasn't harmed and the bad guy went to jail.

In light of this, it became clear that while K-9's may not be suitable for in-water apprehensions. And since there are 554 lakes within Polk County, other options were considered.

The PCSO field tested various animals to be used when suspects enter the water in an attempt to escape.

Otters were among the fastest, but flinging one fifty feet was too simple for the bad guys.

Elephants were not only fast, but they were impossible to be thrown by a suspect. Unfortunately, they don't fit in Ford Explorers.

Manatee were tested but they only fared well when the suspects were older than 95 years old and covered in lettuce, which is a scenario that only really occurs once or twice a month in Polk County.

We tried cats, but, seriously, they are way to smart to get near any kind of water. And, they only work when they pretty much feel like it, which is almost never. And who wants to look at a wet cat—not pretty.

Finally, we tested alligators. They proved to be very fast in the water and not easy for suspects to free themselves from.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office is pleased to announce the creation of a unit like no other in the United States: The PCSO G8R Unit.

Ten deputies are currently being trained to work as handlers for our G8Rs, and funding has already been secured to provide each G8R with a fitted bullet proof vest.

Just like their K-9 counterparts, these G8Rs will also be available for demonstrations at area schools and nursing homes.

However, you lack discipline, compassion, mercy, kindness, patience, and sound decision making.

You pick up your gun and yell 1776 but you truly aren't studied up on freedom. You lack the perspective of others, understanding, and caution when attacking your fellow American. You allow the various media outlets to fill your mind with frustration, your heart with anger, and your soul with rage. You speak and act, too often, from a place of ignorance. Many times, you can tell me what a Red Coat is, but not a statist; I wonder why?

You pick up your gun and say "I wish a MF would". You do that because you don't truly understand chaos, battle, confrontation, and prison. You sit and have fantasies about using your guns, because you can't wait for the opportunity to show just how tough you are. Half the time, you have these visions of violence, against people who look just like you. The kind of attitude that would have you forgive the Master and attack your fellow slave. The type who wants war, because you have decided chaos is the thing that causes change; however, you lack the discipline and foresight to make change using other avenues.

You barely train [in any discipline], read something other than a blog, or listen to others with opposing views.

You don't think critically and rely heavily on confirmation bias, woeful ignorance, and your favorite media outlet or influencer to tell you how to feel. However, you also remind everyone how the media is the devil; not realizing you're in the devils trance.

You want a nasty war in this country but don't understand logistics, how to grow and harvest food, basic engineering, etc. Many of those asking for war, recently were complaining about the lack of tissue.

YOU GOT ALL THE GUNS BIG FELLA, but you are lacking the true substance that will help you understand the deeper meaning of what owning the guns mean.
