I spent part of the day Monday at the Neon Museum. Believe it or not, this was my first visit. I guess when you’ve lived with Neon lights for your entire life, the draw isn’t the same.

But yesterday reminded me of something.

You see, growing up, you’d never find me without a book in my hand. Books felt like air. They were necessary for me to breathe. Then there were the poems. So many poems.

Did we date in HS? I probably wrote a poem about it.

Don’t worry, though; they’ve been destroyed. You see I met someone that I valued their opinion above my own, and I believed when they told me that my writing was subpar. I was crushed. And the worst part was that I believed them. I didn’t take the Taylor Swift approach and re-record my albums.

But I should have.

You see, writing still feels like breathing. So imagine my surprise when I ended up at the Neon Museum to hear readings from authors who took the leap, wrote a story, and got up in front of strangers to share their air.

Ironically, I was asked last week when I wanted to start writing a book.

Someone saw me.

And this time, I see me too.

As I sat surrounded by discarded neon signs, I realized that there are people who, even though the signs may not shine as bright, still attract people to them who appreciate their shine.

So, the writing, which is oxygen to my soul, might be life for someone who breathes in my words.

Never give up on your shine!

Don't hate me, but Valentine's Day has never been a holiday I care about. Bouquets aren't my thing. Chocolates are DEFINITELY my thing! But not just on this day.

This year, I've been married 33 years, and my husband has come to terms with a few facts:

1. The only gift I want is the one that I sent you the link for.
2. Surprise me at your own risk. I hate surprises.
3. Making a homemade lemon tart is my love language.
4. Walking on the beach is my happy place.

Like I said, don't hate me. The language of love to me is showing up every day. And I've realized this past year that I've been lacking in showing up for myself. So here's my Valentine's promise.

I will show up for ME.

How do you celebrate Valentine's Day?

Growth is a funny thing.

I used to think I’d traveled such a far distance from trauma, guilt, denial, you know, the things that keep you from growing.

Having “those” things in the rearview mirror was incredibly comforting.

I’d conquered my past traumas. Or so I thought.

Then I signed up for a program I’d heard was changing people’s lives.

The NVR Leadership Academy.

I work one-on-one with other agents daily; we can be a lot. How would sitting in a room with a group of REALTORS change anything?

But the more people I talked to that I trusted in this industry, the more I knew this was my next move.

My journey through this program uncovered areas that I thought were gone because I’d buried them so deep. I realized truths that I only danced around for fear of judgment. To say the onion was peeled isn’t doing it justice.

I completed the year-long program in 2022, along with 15 of the best people I know. Who, under ordinary circumstances, I would never have met, let alone had any connection to.

Today, I’m back as the guest trustee for program one.

I get to impart wisdom, reflection, and space for the journey these 20 real estate professionals are about to embark on.

They don’t know it yet, but their life changed the moment they stepped on the airplane this morning.

They will never be the same!

Amidst a sea of 17,000+ agents, this feels surprising and exciting all at the same time. As a SAHM before I began my career in this industry, I couldn't have imagined the amount of personal growth I would go through.

My imposter syndrome/humility wrapped up in a bow of people-pleasing would have previously kept me from even sharing these accomplishments with you. But here I am 14 years later, embracing what has come from me taking a chance on myself. Surrounding myself with people who see me better than I see myself.

This industry has given me such insight into so many areas of my life that I get to share with others. It has renewed my desire to grow and evolve. Grow in my personal relationships. Grow in business. Grow in learning. Growth in giving.

The antidote to anxiety is action...

Does this feel true in your life?

One-on-one conversations are my comfort zone.

Another story I've told myself time and time again is that I cannot, no, will not, speak in public.

Yet, I am drawn to groups where I must use my voice.

To introduce myself.

Share my point of view, etc.

The irony is that I sang too loud and off-key to anyone within earshot when I was a kid.

Starred in the school play.

Talked too much!

My dreams were big, yet I felt so small.

So small, in fact, that I let the opinions of others become my opinion of myself.

I am 19,125 days old today.

I still talk too much🗣

Laugh too loud.

Sing off-key🙉

Dance in the chair when the food is good💃🏻

And I know that genuine connection soothes my soul.

Making space to stand in a room of people, if only to say my name, has opened my world to joy, connection, opportunity, and community.
