Las Vegas Metro Police Corrections Academy Class 03-2003 graduated today.
Our community and the LVMPD has 27 new Corrections Officers tonight.
Congratulations to our newest brothers & sisters and here’s to a long & healthy career.
We wanted to post something positive this morning in light of yesterday’s horrific events at UNLV.
During critical incidents, police responses will typically shut down business access in the immediate affected areas.
The LVPPA locates local food establishments in those affected areas. We purchase food for our officers, who will undoubtedly be stuck on perimeter spots for hours.
Yesterday was no different. We walked into the In-N-Out Burger store #88 located on Maryland Pkwy in front of the campus.
We ordered over 300 hamburgers and 150 fries. Ashlie, the store manager, ceased all other operations. She and her crew prepared food for our cops.
This is the second time this year the staff of this store has done this for our officers.
The LVPPA would like for everyone in our community to know what this local establishment and crew did for our cops.
The next time you're looking for a burger, take a minute to visit In-N-Out. You won’t be disappointed.

LVPPA President Steve Grammas provides an update on this afternoon’s active shooter event at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
The savage scumbag who walked onto that campus and shot innocents is dead. The brave men and women of law enforcement saw to it that he will no longer breathe the same air as the students whom he tried to kill today.
*Critical Incident Alert*
Our officers are on scene of a reported active shooter incident at the UNLV Campus.
Although details are not corroborated at this time, please know that officers and tactical teams are on scene working on the problem.
Expect a large police presence in the immediate area for a lengthy time period. We will provide an update when accurate information is available.
On November 30, 2023, Sergeant Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix of the Nevada Highway Patrol were killed in the line of duty.
As they were in the process of investigating a traffic stop on Interstate 15 in Las Vegas, an intoxicated driver passing by plowed into them. The scumbag who hit them fled the scene.
Michael was 37 years old and had been a trooper for nearly 11 years. He is survived by his wife, son, parents, sister and brother-in-law.
Alberto was 54 years old and had been a trooper for four years. Alberto also served our nation in the United States Air Force. He is survived by his wife and three children.
Godspeed, gents.
*Retirement Alert*
Congratulations to LVMPD Corrections Sergeant Sonia Watterson, who retired last week after serving our community and Las Vegas Metro for over 17 years.
LVPPA Vice President Scott Nicholas and Executive Director Myron Hamm had the privilege of presenting this plaque to Sonia on behalf of a grateful association.
Congrats, sister, on a well-earned retirement.
Overnight, while many of us were sleeping peacefully, hundreds of Southern Nevada law enforcement officers were working diligently to keep our community safe.
We woke this morning to learn that two Nevada State Troopers were killed in the line of duty in the early morning hours.
While we cannot speak accurately as to the details of the event, our hearts are heavy for the loss of our fallen.
Please take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by these brave men and women on a daily basis. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
*Officer-Involved Shooting*
Last night, we were on the scene of an OIS in a residential neighborhood in the area of Sahara and Sloan, located in the Southeast Area Command. Our officers are OK and are NOT injured.
We would like to take a moment to honor the life of one of our members who recently passed away.
LVMPD Corrections Officer Perry Crooks had been battling an ongoing medical issue. He passed away surrounded by those who loved him.
Perry was 36 years old. He had only served our Department and this community for a few short years, but he made an everlasting impact on his squad mates and fellow corrections officers.
Godspeed, Perry. Rest easy, brother.
We recently had an opportunity to visit with Steph from the New Zealand Police Department and Ryan from the New Zealand Department of Corrections during their trip to Las Vegas. It is always great to meet fellow officers from throughout the world.
It’s Giving Tuesday, a day when people around the world are encouraged to make donations to charities and other worthy causes. Today, we hope you’ll consider making a donation to LVPPA’s Law Enforcement Assistance Fund (LEAF), which is dedicated to supporting the families of Southern Nevada police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Your donation will help us stay in the lives of fallen officers’ families and make sure the children are supported at every milestone in their lives — from birthdays and holidays to graduations and weddings, LEAF is there for them. We also distribute college scholarships to children of police officers every year and so much more. Every donation, big or small, can make a difference and help support our mission. Learn more about our charity and make a contribution at www.leafcharity.org.

And to our members and fellow law enforcement officers who will be sacrificing time away from their families to keep our communities safe throughout the holiday season, we see you and appreciate all that you do.

This year’s Santa Day event was OUTSTANDING!!!! This was our last membership event of the year and, as always, it’s the best.
The PPA represents over 3,400 law enforcement officers here in southern Nevada. We appreciate each and every one of our members. It is a privilege to represent and serve you.

To our members, Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas. We will see you on New Year’s Eve. As always, stay safe and watch each other’s backs.
Today we remember Correctional Officer Daniel Leach, who died on this day in 2009.
Officer Leach joined the LVMPD on June 18, 1984, following the completion of his formal education in Louisiana. Dan was a career corrections officer, and at the time of his death was assigned to the Tucker Holding Facility in Laughlin, Nevada.
On the morning of November 21, 2009, he began his shift by picking up a prisoner transport van from the Clerk County Detention Center and driving to Laughlin. While traveling southbound on U.S. 95, Officer Leach was involved in a two-vehicle accident and died instantly.
Officer Leach was 49 years when he died, and had served on the Department for 25 years. He was survived by his wife, two children, his parents, one brother and one sister.

On November 19, 2009, Officer Nettleton was in the garage of his residence when he was approached by numerous subjects, one of them armed with a handgun. When the suspects attempted to rob Nettleton at gunpoint, he fought back. Nettleton wounded one of the suspects with gunfire before being fatally shot.

God Speed Brother
We lost our Brother, Police Officer Trevor Nettleton in 2009 when he died in a gunfight with savages.
His son Tanner was just a baby at the time. Now he is a young man and a badass hockey player. The LVPPA is a proud supporter of Tanner and his team, the Oshawa Generals.
We sponsor his team because every time he hits the ice we want him to know that his dad’s brothers and sisters from Las Vegas Metro are with him.
Keep kicking ass Tanner and Roll Gens!!!
God Speed and Semper Fi Trevor.
On this and every Veterans Day, we express our deepest gratitude for the sacrifices and contributions of all those, both living and dead, who served honorably in the U.S. armed forces during times of war or peace so that we can continue to have the freedoms and liberties we hold dear. We would especially like to thank the veterans serving in law enforcement. These men and women continued their service to our country by serving and protecting our communities. We salute you!
Today we honor Officer Wilbur McGee, who died on this day in 1955.
Officer McGee joined the Las Vegas Police Department on June 22, 1954, and served the Department for 17 months.
On November 11, 1955, Officer McGee was investigating an early morning burglary in which $300 in coins were taken. Unbeknownst to the victim of the burglary, two pistols were also stolen, as well as a pellet gun and a 22-caliber revolver. Later in the day, Officer McGee received a call that the suspect was at a local downtown motel. When Officer McGee arrived at the hotel, he heard the desk clerk talking to the suspect in a loud voice. The suspect surrendered the pellet gun but as the officer was handcuffing him, he pulled the second gun from his waistband and shot Officer McGee four times. As Officer McGee lay mortally wounded, the suspect took the officer’s revolver and fled out the back door of the hotel. When he was captured a short time later, he was still carrying the slain officer’s revolver.
Officer McGee was 33 when he died and was survived by his wife.

UFC Champion Frank Mir calls Las Vegas home. He grew up here. Went to high school here. He is part of our community. He is a staunch supporter of the LVPPA and the men and women of law enforcement.
Last week, Frank visited our LVMPD Police Academy where he spent part of his day teaching the teachers. They trained for several hours. When they were done, Frank visited with our current recruits who are in the police academy.
Frank explained how important training is and how important continued training is throughout one’s career. You can never train too hard for a job that can kill you.
Thank you Frank for always supporting the LVPPA. Thank you for your support of law enforcement. And thank you for making our community a better place to live.
The LVPPA (your police association) has a mat room with elite level combatives instructors with training that takes place weekly and is free to our members. Your skill level does NOT matter. This is cops working with cops. Give it a shot.
As always stay safe.

Happy Nevada Day! Observed annually on the last Friday in October, this day commemorates the state’s frontier legacy and admission into the Union as the 36th state on October 31, 1864. Fun fact: Nevada was one of two territories to achieve statehood during the Civil War (the first being West Virginia in 1863), earning it the distinction as a “Battle Born” state.
