42 years ago Jim Holder published the first issue of Mainsheet Magazine. Four decades and countless articles later we are pleased to continue Jim's vision, supporting all the amazing Catalina Association contributors and providing our growing family of owners a magazine focused on the world of Catalina Yachts.

Introducing Chesapeake Yacht Sales new broker Ian Geeson! Ian has been boating for most of his life. His grandparents kept a sailboat in Deltaville and eventually moved to the area to enjoy their retirement on the water. Ian’s parents soon followed, moving their young family to the Northern Neck and purchasing a 30’ sailboat that the family would take around the Chesapeake and eventually to the Bahamas. Ian was the president of the Sea Scouts in High School and taught at The Annapolis Sailing School during college break. He holds a 100-ton Captain’s License and has operated power and sailboats from Maine to the Caribbean. Many of his trips over the past decade were deliveries for new owners of boats brokered by Chesapeake Yacht Sales. He lives with his wife and their daughter in Virginia Beach. They are enthusiastic about multi-hulls and are part owners of a performance sailing catamaran that they cruise in the Bay and Carolina sounds.

in 1928, Frank Butler was born in California!

Butler, joined the Navy and attended college before beginning his working life in the engineering field. His boat building career began in 1962, when he contracted with a Southern California builder for a 21’ daysailer.

A few years later, he founded Catalina Yachts, which has grown to become the largest builder of fiberglass production sailboats in the United States.

A key to Butler’s success was his personal involvement with customers and those who worked with him; Catalina is “family.” Butler listened to people, and understood market trends. At Catalina,his sailing legacy is still influencing future generations.
