The train depot in Rhyolite was completed in June 1908. The timing of the complete is ironic in that it coincided with the beginning on the decline of Rhyolite. Within months of completion of the depot, more people were leaving town using the station than arriving. In the first year of operation, the railroad generated a small profit. Between 1909 and 1919 the railroads lost money each year. By 1919, the railroads cut their losses and salvaged the tracks for other projects.

We are excited to announce our next project by Brian Gibson with a performance happening this Saturday!
“IN RELATIVE OBSCURITY” is a full-length video concerning a site specific audio/visual happening by Brian Christopher Gibson that places emphasis on both Belgian artist Albert Szukalski & his recorded approach to art as a “situation maker” as well as the importance of documentation of art that takes places in isolated environments for future generations to find themselves in; for better or worse.
Starting September 9th, 2023, Gibson will occupy the studio of A S A P Gallery to present IN RELATIVE OBSCURITY in full. The project consists of over an hour of music inspired by the Death Valley terrain that surrounds Rhyolite, Nevada, USA.
In addition, Gibson will also share recently unearthed information and photos of Goldwell Open Air Museum founder, Albert Szukalski and his early works, including first hand accounts with the man himself and recollections of notable moments from his earlier years before making his way to America to work “in relative obscurity”.
