When is the right time to give your children their first phone? How do you know when they are ready to take on this responsibility? Giving your child a phone also gives them access to the internet and social media, apps and games, and everything else that goes along with having a cell phone. But you might want to give your child a phone for basic use, like having a way to contact you when traveling to and from school, after-school activities and sports, and being at friends' houses. So parents, here are some things to ask yourself and consider as you and your child discuss getting a first phone: http://ow.ly/X4YB50OnRcy

Here's a straightforward answer. VERY IMPORTANT. Getting enough water every day is vital for your health. Drinking water can prevent dehydration, a condition that can cause unclear thinking, result in mood change, cause your body to overheat, and lead to constipation and kidney stones. Water has no calories, so it can help manage body weight and reduce calorie intake when substituted for drinks with calories, such as sweet tea or regular soda. It helps your body maintain a normal temperature; lubricate and cushion joints; protect your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues; and eliminate waste through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements. CCP's Quick Tips to Drink More Water 🥤 Carry a water bottle with you and refill it throughout the day (join the bandwagon and get yourself a Stanley or Yeti cup!). 🥤 Freeze some freezer-safe water bottles and take one with you for ice-cold water all day long. 🥤 Choose water over sugary drinks. 🥤 Opt for water when eating out. You'll save money AND reduce calories. 🥤 Serve water during your meals - breakfast, lunch, and dinner. 🥤 Add a wedge of lime or lemon to your water, which can help improve the taste and helps with digestion. 🥤 Make sure your kids are getting enough water too! Always remember to pack their water bottle in their backpack before they head off to school. Are you gearing up for the Turkey Trot this year? Did you know nearly a million people across the country head to the starting lines the morning of Thanksgiving? Getting that exercise in before the turkey hits the table makes this a very popular day to race. However, a good chunk of that crowd isn't always hard-core runners, and for many, this might be the only day of the year they race. So if that sounds like you, follow these six tips to be ready for the big race day: http://ow.ly/qCBe50LJyW0 1. Most trots are 5K, or 3.1 miles, which is a great distance for beginners. Save the half-marathon, 10K, or 5-miler for the future. You don't want to overdo it and ruin your holiday! 2. Prep your body by running a few miles or walking before race day, especially if you live a relatively idle lifestyle. 3. Remember to make it fun! Invite your family and friends to join you. 4. Comfortable shoes are key! Treat your feet right by wearing supportive shoes. Any athletic shoe will do for a one-time 5K. 5. Dress for the weather. Take a layered approach to your outfit. When you start moving, your body will naturally warm up. And if you wear layers, you can easily remove clothes (or put them on) to match how you feel. Some even wear festive costumes! 6. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! If you're expecting to get sweaty, make sure you’re filling your tank with fluids. This is especially important if you plan on heading out for Thanksgiving Eve.

Homeowners, it's time to clear out those toxins! Learning about potential toxins in your home may be concerning, but knowledge can help you take action. Some are easy to see, for instance, a loose electrical socket or torn carpet on the stairs, but others can be harder to spot and maybe even invisible, like lead, mold, and radon. Luckily, there are ways you can find and fix these unseen home hazards. Here's how to test for or prevent many home health hazards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH): http://ow.ly/ZPz550J7pbI - If your home was built before 1978, test exposed paint for lead. You can buy test kits yourself or hire a professional. Some city health departments provide free test kits. - Have children tested for lead exposure regularly, from at least birth through age six. - Use vent fans in rooms that have lots of moisture, like the bathroom, to prevent mold growth. - If you have a leak or flood in your home, dispose of damaged items as soon as possible. - Clean small areas of mold on walls or fabric with hot, soapy water. Be sure to wear a mask, gloves, and goggles while cleaning. - Test your home for radon. Some local, county, or state programs offer free test kits. You can contact the National Radon Program Services at 1-800-SOS-RADON (1-800-767-7236). - Learn more about other potential toxins in the home at http://ow.ly/bbXb50J7pbJ.

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Recently the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics updated the developmental milestones guidelines. This is the first update to the guidelines since they were first announced in 2005. These milestone guides and resources can help identify delays and give parents the means to start conversations about their concerns with their pediatric providers. It is important to note that the changes were evaluated and finalized in 2019 before the pandemic even began. With guidance from our team at CapitalCare Developmental Pediatrics, we have all the information you need about these changes. Community Care Developmental Pediatrics is in full support of these updated milestones. Our team believes that early screening, especially for early markers in social and emotional milestones, has been a standard of practice for our group prior to these revisions. At CapitalCare Developmental Pediatrics, our goal is to continue providing the most up-to-date care for patients and their families. These revisions will help our care team continue to be at the forefront of evidence-based practice in our office. How much time do your kids spend watching TV or movies, playing on a smartphone, tablet, or computer, or video games with friends? It might seem like a lot. That's because it probably is. Nowadays, there's so much content available to kids on something they can carry from room to room. Handheld devices do have some benefits. Like kids can use video chat to talk with relatives who live far away. Or, there are some educational apps and programs designed especially for children that can help them in school. So, while some screen time can be educational, it's easy to go overboard. So how can parents find a balance? Set boundaries. For example, parents can set timers. Some apps let you stop content from continuing to play automatically. For more tips on limiting screen time, follow http://ow.ly/u09n50HSPJr. #HealthyChildren #ScreenTim

Showing love with chocolate-covered strawberries and roses isn’t the only way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. February 14th is also National Donor Day! National Donor Day acknowledges and honors the generosity and compassion of organ, eye, and tissue donors. It also celebrates the people’s lives saved by organ donations, those waiting for a lifesaving transplant, and those who passed while waiting for a donation. We can’t think of a better way to share the love than to raise awareness through a "heart" conversation about the lifesaving benefits of organ, eye, and tissue donation. Join us as we share the LOVE! #ValentinesDay #NationalDonorDay #HeartConversation http://ow.ly/bVOl50HSPre

Meet Karen Houston, our very own nurse navigator for CCP's Cancer Care Program. Let's get to know Karen and her role! No individual ever wants to hear the words, "you have cancer." That's where Karen comes in. She is able to stand by our patients to support them through tribulation. Karen says, "Although a difficult appointment, I am grateful to be able to be present supporting the patient, their family, and the PCP in outlining the plan of action to tackle a difficult diagnosis." Karen always finds time to unwind and relax when she isn't in the office. She says, "Travel is something I love. I am very happy when I am planning my next trip! When I retire, I would like to plan a road trip cross-country." Karen is married with three children, all living outside of New York state. FUN FACT! Karen's husband works at CCP too! He's a courier, transporting all internal mail and packages within our offices. She loves traveling to visit her daughter in San Diego, her son in Denver, and her 2nd daughter in New Jersey. She also has a granddaughter who lives in New Jersey who just turned one! To learn more about all of our incredible members that make up Community Care Physicians, follow @ myccplife on Instagram! #Oncology #Nurse #CancerAwareness #MyCCPLife
