First Baptist Church of Lawrence, Kansas

We are an American Baptist congregation in Lawrence, KS. Welcome! Welcome is the foundation of who we are as church. We welcome all who enter our doors as family.

We hope that this gives you an idea of who we are and where we are going as we journey together through the Christian faith. Our mission statement at FBC is simple: “To love God, love others as self, and serve the world.”

As we work together to accomplish that mission, we find ourselves practicing four primary tasks:

We welcome. We welcome the presence of God’s Spirit working through our worship

Join us for worship on Sunday, 9/1 at 8:38 a.m. in the Judson Room (enter front double doors and walk straight ahead until you find people), or in person & virtually at 11:00 a.m. on YouTube at https://buff.ly/2Y55jCK or Facebook at https://buff.ly/3ze5SOc ! We begin our September worship series today, “This World is Not My Home: Faith, Resistance, and Daniel,” and Pastor Matt will preach its first sermon, “This World is Not My Home: Daniel Makes a Choice,” based on Daniel Chapter 1. The 2-way sermon discussion will meet at 12:30p in person in the Sojourners Room and on Zoom (get Zoom link: https://buff.ly/3CekxXF)

Sermon series details:
The narrative of Daniel is a story of a stranger in a strange land. God’s people had been in exile under the Babylonians, and later the Medes and Persians, for a long, long time. They found themselves intertwined with the culture that surrounded them. In the stories that we explore together in this series, Daniel and his peers did the hard work of living inside of a culture without letting the culture inhabit them. As we live as God’s people today, in a world that is not our own, their faith journey informs ours.
September 1 This World is Not My Home: Daniel Makes a Choice (Ch. 1)
September 8 When the World Destroys: The Fiery Furnace (Ch 3)
September 15 Discernment in the World: Reading the Writing on the Wall (Ch. 5)
September 22 Transforming the World: The Den of Lions (Ch. 6)
September 29 Redemption in the World: Beasts and Visions (Ch. 7)

About the worship series:
Poet Wendell Berry writes, "When despair for the world grows in me | and I wake in the night at the least sound | in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be, | I go and lie down where the wood drake | rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. | I come into the peace of wild things..."
Perhaps we know the despair of which Berry writes…and perhaps we know the experience of responding in peace, resting in awe of God’s creation. This month, we will allow for both spaces in our lives, awake to both the beauty and the destruction present in our natural world. As we celebrate this theme with congregations around the world, you are invited to join us for a Season of Creation:
August 4: Created to Care (Gen 1 and 2)
August 11: Sky and Water Sunday (Job 38)
Sermon led by the FBC Earthworks Blue Team, as we celebrate baptism together!
August 18: Humans and Animals Sunday (Job 39)

Our July sermon series, "All the Feelings," begins this Sunday, July 7! As American Christians, we have been trained to be happy/joyful and push aside other emotions. God did not create humans to have only one emotion, though. Humans experience so many emotions–joy, sadness, anger, fear, and disgust, just to name a few. All of our emotions are there to tell us something about ourselves, the world, and God. If we ignore the harder emotions and only focus on happiness, we are missing out on the fullness of life. In July, join us as we look at "All the Feelings" in biblical narratives, examining the emotions at play in each story and asking where God is present in them.

July 7: Joseph & His Brothers (Genesis 45.1-15)

July 14: Jesus in the Temple as a Boy (Luke 2:41-52)

July 21: David and Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9)

July 28: Hannah in the Temple (1 Samuel 1:1-20)

We have 2 worship services, one in person only at 8:38 a.m. in the Judson Room (enter front double doors and walk straight ahead until you find people), and another that's in person & virtually at 11:00 a.m. on YouTube at https://buff.ly/2Y55jCK or Facebook at https://buff.ly/3ze5SOc

Also, a special movie event to go with our series! On Saturday, July 13th at 6pm we will be showing a popular animated movie about learning the importance and interplay of all our emotions. We hope you'll join us!
