Meet Scout. Scout was an adorable dog so loved by his owner who was heartbroken over his passing last year. An old friend of mine wanted to memorialize Scout so his spirit could live on through a portrait. When it was received near the anniversary of Scout’s passing, I was thankful to hear how much he loved his painting.
Our pets impact our lives so deeply. Letting go is often the hardest thing. I’m grateful that my pet portraits can help remind their companions of the love and joy they brought throughout their life. Just look at that dog’s smile! He lived such a happy life! Thanks for the opportunity to paint him, Victoria!

I’d love to paint other pet portraits! Contact me for rates and my easy process. Check out my updated website to see other recent pet portraits to get a sense of my style.

In early August, I painted this portrait of a sweet yellow lab named Sandi. I worked with a variety of photos but the second image was the main photo it is based off of. Using multiple photos, I found the depth in her eyes, the gold in her coat, the soft reddish hue in her nose and that beautiful dog that her owner loved and missed so much. Sometimes, you don't have the perfect photo of your dog that you wish you did. I love how a painting can bring out the best in our animals. :)

Want to see my 6 inch pet portraits in person? I'll be at the Humane Society of Lebanon County's Corks and Bottles Beer and Wine Tasting Festival this afternoon from 4-7 pm at the Tulpehocken Manor. Come out and support animals in need! I'll have jewelry, art and shirts and lots of FREE hand sanitizer to share with everyone, too.

I'm heading out to the Humane Society of Lebanon County's annual Corks and Bottles Beer and Wine Tasting Festival at the Tulpehocken Manor this Saturday Aug. 22! I've been making lots of new jewelry in the past few months including many paintings of beaches and animals, some new abstract color-focused pieces and jewelry made with found seashells and others with my grandmothers' vintage buttons. Come on out and check out the new pieces and help support our local shelter. Dogs, drinks, art and more! It should be a lovely afternoon. :)

I’ll be out at the Lebanon Art Walk tonight with my jewelry! Come out, get some fresh air, listen to great music and check out the painted fish hung along the trail that runs beside the Hazel D**e. I’ll be at #1 with the fish painted by my boys (with a smidge of help from me) behind the YMCA. Hope to see some of you there! (From a bit of a distance too!)

Last year, I participated in a small works show at Lebanon Picture Frame & Fine Art Gallery, LLC. My painting of my dog, Christmas Biscuit sold and, since I have a great model hanging around all the time, I decided to paint her again.

She joined our family a few days before Christmas 5 years ago. She was the most timid, frightened dog and it took nearly 2 weeks for her scared tail to come out from between her legs. Now she happily cavorts through the woods with 2 small boys, wiggles with happiness when she sees her favorite people, barks warnings to anyone new and the tail is happily curled upwards and wags at the mere sound of "Hello" from her family. Here's a 6 by 6 inch acrylic paining of her smiling.

Now is the perfect time to get a paining of your furry family member! Just check in with me for details. :)

I most often paint animals these days along with the landscapes and flowers you see in my jewelry. After I painted one of my recent dog portraits, I had an inquiry about whether I could paint a pair of brothers. I was up for the challenge and the subject change!
It’s quite different painting skin after painting fur for awhile. I always appreciate when someone likes my painting style and asks me to try something new. :)
Still in my textural, painterly style, this is how it turned out. Thanks for the opportunity to paint your sons, Kristen Knakal Sergeant

Last week, I posted a graphite drawing of a German Shepherd named Jake. Here is the second drawing I created for his owner of a dog named Krypto. It was a gift for her friend who received it this past week and loved it. Krypto has a great story, too.
………………….
Krypto was purchased at 8 weeks old and started training almost immediately for search and rescue as well as Narcotics detection. Mark and Krypto started Sallada Search and Rescue which then became Special Unit 66 in 2014. Krypto has been utilized on multiple search calls for missing persons and works part time with Highspire Police Dept for narcotics. He is still active in both capacities at 9 years old.
…….
It was so cool to have the opportunity to draw such important dogs. :)

I hope everyone is maintaining sanity and finding productive ways to occupy time. I figure it’s a great time to post more art! I’ve been busy creating but too busy to post any. Here’s the first in awhile.
……………….

A few years ago, I was asked to create a pencil drawing of this beautiful German Shepherd, Jake. This January, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that his owner was looking for a matching drawing of another dog. (I’ll share that one soon enough.)
Jake was pulled from Berks ARL by CharWills German Shepherd Rescue at 10 months of age after his owners couldn’t handle his activity level. HIs new owner adopted him from the rescue and realized he needed a job to focus his energy. She began training with him for search and rescue at the age of 2. He was active and used on multiple searches with Special Unit 66 Search and Rescue for 4 years before having to retire due to what was suspected as hip issues. Unfortunately, he was seen by a neurologist at Hope Veterinary Specialists and diagnosed with a spinal tumor. He passed away in October 2019 only 3 months after his diagnosis.
I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to draw such a special dog. :)

I created a few small pet portraits of some sweet dogs over the holidays. Here is another adorable pup – a Morkie named Biscuit. This square 6 inch acrylic painting on board, was created using a variety of photos to capture the spirit of the dog. Iridescent paints add an extra shine to the hair. Once painted, I delivered it framed and ready to hang so the owner didn’t need to frame it herself.

Let me know if you or a friend or family member is looking for a pet portrait! I have some time opening up for a few more custom portraits.

In between creating jewelry, I've been painting small pet portraits of some adorable dogs recently. I created a few before Christmas. Since they were gifts, I waited a bit to show all of you. In comparison to my jewelry, they're a gigantic 6 in. by 6 in. acrylic painting on board. (ha ha.)

Here's the first of a well-loved dog named Bubba whose owner I met at the Humane Society of Lebanon County fundraiser this summer.

Autumn foliage landscape necklace 10/01/2018

Fall is definitely settling in in Central Pa. The leaves are slowly changing and there's a crispness in the air. The beauty of the season inspires some vibrant, colorful paintings of the landscape. White Rabbit Earrings 03/21/2018

So I began painting my tiny jewelry as a way to keep painting and creating in the minimal amount of time allowed with children. Most pieces are an inch and a half or less in diameter. So it's a creative outlet and I can finish it unlike the much larger pieces that I was leaving unfinished.
It's also a way to make original artwork accessible to more people. Someone may like a piece of artwork but it doesn't match their decor or fit the space or the budget. I look to create budget-friendly pieces that you can wear and change as your mood or outfit changes.
Lately, I've been painting some commissioned dog jewelry. They went well so I was asked to paint a portrait again. And I stepped back into painting on canvas and so much larger! This one is 6 in. by 6 in. and it feels gigantic! ha ha. It was fun bringing the bigger brushes and professional paints out again. :) This is a sweet dog named Sophie.
I'm willing to do other custom pet paintings of a similar size if there's interest. Just message me!

Horses in Winter snowy landscape framed necklace 01/14/2018

It's, sadly, been too unbearably cold to ride the past few weeks so I happily have some new tiny paintings to share. I exhibited 4 miniature frame necklaces at the December 2017 members show at Lebanon Valley Council On The Arts and one sold! It was a night skyscape inspired by Vincent Van Gogh.
But this piece was inspired by the beauty of horses in the winter. Even when given shelter, you'll find many horses outside when it's snowing enjoying the weather. They don't mind it at all with their woolly winter coats!

Horses in Winter snowy landscape framed necklace “Horses make a landscape look beautiful.” –Alice Walker Horses bear a sweet reminder to me of the coming change in seasons. Their coats grow long and thick as the days grow colder and winter edges in. This tiny bay duo reminds me of the many winters spent with my horses. Painted on silver

Night skyscape framed necklace 11/18/2017

I have another miniature painting to share! I painted a few night skyscapes after seeing the beautifully painted movie Loving Vincent last weekend. Not even close to Van Gogh's style, but The Starry Night is one of my favorites and inspired these few pieces.
