As a first responder, it’s not often we see the results of our efforts to make a difference. Today, Station 3-B shift experienced just that. A Mom and her young daughter returned to Station 3 and visited the crew who she handed her little girl to less than 3 months ago.
April 26,2024 a five year old girl arrived at the station with a traumatic hand injury. The crew received a call 15 minutes before she arrived with her mother bringing her by car. She was swiftly placed in an ambulance and received medical treatment while enroute to a hospital. She was then transported by helicopter to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where she received medical treatment that saved her hand. Today, Chief Forrester presented the crew with “The Chiefs Challenge Coin”, not for doing their sworn duty but for what they did when returning to the station. The car the mom and daughter arrived in was heavily soiled. The crew couldn’t stand the thought of them returning to the car and seeing that. They immediately went to work and cleaned the vehicle. The mom’s comments today made it all worth while!
Well Done Joseph Stodola, Eli Hemingway and David Velez

Nowadays, more families are sharing homes with multiple generations. With more people occupying a single residence, fire safety should be a priority!

Elderly or disabled family members should be located on the main floor, close to exits. While this may be an inconvenience to some, it will make escaping a fire or medical emergencies easier.

Before enjoying the solar eclipse today, remember to have your eclipse glasses on hand. Eclipse glasses are not regular sunglasses, and are recommended to be used for viewing the eclipse.

Remember to NOT look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer. If you are driving and would like to watch the eclipse, we encourage people to pull over to a safe location to do so. Plan your home escape plan:
Practice your drill at least twice a year. Push the smoke alarm button to start your home fire drill.
Get out fast.
Practice escaping from bedrooms when people are asleep. Make sure everyone in your household can open all doors and windows, including guests. Security bars on windows should have emergency release devices so they can be opened easily from the inside.
Go to your meeting place.
In a real fire, get out and stay out.
Call 9-1-1 from outside.

Lee County Fire and Emergency Services are currently flushing fire hydrants throughout Lee County. We expect to be completed within 5 days.
The process of flushing hydrants may cause periodic discoloration of the water in the areas where fire hydrants were recently flushed. The discoloration is harmless and can be cleared by letting the water run for a short time.
If it is not clear the first time, wait a few minutes and repeat this process.
Thank you for your understanding while we complete our annual inspections.

Reminder

Be advised that Georgia Forestry Commission will be conducting prescribed fire operations on the Park this week. Prescribed fire is a very important management tool for maintaining and enhancing grasslands. A well planned burn reduces wildfire risk, improves wildlife habitat, controls insects and disease, and much more.

Find more info about how the Forest Service in Georgia manages land with prescribed fire at:
