January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.

More than 11,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer. The good news is vaccination and regular screening can prevent the disease.

Anyone with a cervix is at risk for cervical cancer. It occurs most often in people over 30. Long-lasting infection with certain type of human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer.

Screening tests such as a pap smear and the HPV vaccine can prevent cervical cancer. When cervical cancer is found early, it is highly treatable.

Talk to your healthcare provider to see if scheduling a pap smear, to detect HPV infection and/or abnormal cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer, is right for you.
