RE: April 1 Press Release Update, Retraction Request

Regarding the report of an attempted bus-stop child abduction of a Lee County student to 911 and the Leesburg Police on March 22, 2024, the Leesburg Police makes the following press release.

After a thorough investigation of this reported incident by Sgt. Steven Johnson (Patrol Division), Captain James Vick (C.I.D. Division), Captain Jason Anthony (S.R.O. Division), and Bus Transportation Supervisor Latesha Wilson, it was determined the incident was in-fact a misinterpretation as follows:

On 03-22-2024, a six-year-old child, (who normally rides the bus home with his teenage siblings), rode the bus home alone due to both of his elder siblings becoming sick. This child got off the school bus at his designated neighborhood bus stop at the intersection of Peach Ave and Fox Chase Court. Students dropped off at this designated location walk to their respective homes in this neighborhood. It should be noted that there are two (2) different Lee County school buses that stop at this designated location minutes apart from each other to drop off children. This said six-year-old child rides the first of the two Lee County school buses to make this designated neighborhood stop.

On this date, there had been inclement weather. When this six-year-old child got off the first bus, there was another neighborhood parent parked on the curb in a black SUV waiting for his child to get off the second bus. This parent does not generally pick his child up at the stop except for inclement conditions. As the said six-year-old child walked past this SUV, the waiting parent spoke and offered to give the child a ride home. It is very important to note that the mother of this child had just two days prior sat him down to have the “Stranger-Danger” talk and warn of strangers attempting to lure children into vehicles to abduct them. The said child in this instance did not recognize the other neighborhood parent, and just as his mother had taught him…took off running and told his family who called police.

We commend both the child’s parents for being proactive and having the “Stranger-Danger” talk with their children, and the child himself for his response to what he perceived to be a threat. We also commend the father of the second child for being thoughtful of other neighborhood children.

I would personally like to thank our officers and investigators who set everything else aside, and that worked so speedily and diligently to identify and close this high priority incident case. I would also like to thank the Lee County School System, our 911 center, and the public for submitting the requested responses of vehicles and suspect information in the initial investigation.

Respectfully,

Christopher J. Prokesh
