I needed shoulders to stand on.

When I began as a paid speaker, I had so many questions.

I listened to trainings and other speakers talk about the industry, and I found it helpful to interact with that community.

But something was missing.

I needed shoulders to stand on, I needed support from people who knew the business & were currently booking speeches in today’s industry.

I needed someone to help build my demo reel.

I needed someone to help build my website.

I needed someone to tell me whether my speech was even something companies would pay for.

I needed someone to help me know how to market myself in this unfamiliar space.

And yet, I could never find it all in one place. And then I joined the Velocity Coaching Program .

I was coached by founder and his support and instruction gave me a new confidence that my message was worth paying good money for.

The coaching program was a one stop shop for building my speaking business-it helped me build everything I needed to be successful as a speaker.

Now it was in my own control how hard I would hustle-I had the tools to do it.

Within a few months of joining the year long program, I was charging over 3x as much as my previous keynote fee and knew that this would be my full time career for life.

3 years later, & brought me on as Head of Coaching to help their students do the same.

Today I am in the virtual studio speaking to the leadership team at Charles Schwab. Let me tell you how that happened.
11 years ago I wrote an article on LinkedIn about how to grow your influence. It was read by Liz Hall, VP of Training for C&A Industries, a staffing company in Omaha, Nebraska.
Liz got on my site and bought my book The Power of Influence. When the order came through I saw her title in charge of training so I emailed her and started a dialogue.
A few months later I was speaking in Nebraska for Subway and I invited Liz to come and see me speak. She came and after the speech she hired me to speak to her team at C&A.
Liz and I have become great friends. I have spoken for C&A at least 7 times and one of those times we did a client appreciation breakfast where I spoke for companies who use their staffing services.
First National Bank was in that room and hired me to come and speak at the bank and I have since spoken for First National Bank five times.
A leader at First National Bank left during Covid and took a job at Charles Schwab and when they discussed bringing in a speaker she spoke up and said, “I know who you should hire.”

So here are the takeaways:
– Create content that adds value
– Business is about relationships – always be building relationships
– As you build those relationships focus on the needs, fears and victories of your clients so you can serve them and add value where needed
– Be really good at what you do – it is the best advertising

What brings you joy?

Do you know an Air Force Command Pilot?

We do.

This week, I had an in-person coaching session with one of our Velocity students, Derek Oaks.

Derek recently retired from the Air Force and is taking his experiences of making high stakes decisions, to the stage as a paid, professional speaker.

As we craft his keynote, I get to listen to his stories of combat in Afghanistan and other countries. It has been inspiring to say the least and increased my own gratitude for the freedom I enjoy as a citizen born in the US.

Derek and I spent 2.5 hours together at that white board, marking it up with thoughts, stories, and takeaways. At the end of those hours, we stepped back, looked at each other and Derek said two words I LOVE to hear as a speaker’s coach.

“That’s it!”

I am excited for Derek, excited for the audiences he’s going to impact, and selfishly, I’m excited that I get a front row seat to watching it happen.

Last week I was asked to judge a storytelling competition for the National Speakers Association Mountain west Chapter.
The 10 speakers who competed were fantastic storytellers - it was awesome to watch! But the winner that night was Michelle McCullough.
To me, the coolest part about Michelle winning was that she wasn’t telling a new story. In fact, I’ve heard her tell this story for years. What was amazing, is she simply got better at telling it.
And as I watched Michelle’s brilliance, here are three things I think we can all learn about storytelling.
1. Make the key lines in your story memorable. Michelle word smithed a little bit to make certain lines catchy & memorable & then used call backs to those lines to cement them in the minds of the audience
2. Learn to use the pause. In a 5 minute story it’s easy to feel rushed, but often less is more. Using pause to create emphasis, drama, or humor is a simple way to add effect & make the telling more powerful
3. Uncover humor. Within every story there is humor to be uncovered. It’s there. Perhaps it’s when you look at it from a different angle or when you flush out the inner or outer dialogue that is happening. Michelle took the humor in her study to a whole new level and not by inserting humor, but by uncovering it.

I loved watching Michelle perform last week because it was a great reminder to me that we all have great stories we just need to learn to tell them well
