It’s here again: Daylight Saving Time begins this coming Sunday. And for residents of Tennessee, it may be the last time they ever have to change their clocks. A bill in the State congress has proposed ending time changes for Tennesseans in both Central and Eastern time zones, meaning the state would remain on Daylight Saving Time all year round. Colorado, Florida and Nevada have tried to pass similar bills unsuccessfully in the past.

A psychiatrist at the University of Bologna in Italy recently found a correlation between sleep deprivation and mental health issues in teenagers. Those who lacked sufficient sleep were more likely to suffer from anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts. Teens were surveyed across 11 European countries.

So, how much sleep do teenagers need, anyway? The answer is, more than adults. Sleep experts recommend 8.5 to 9 hours per night for teens to be fully rested. And yet, they usually sleep far less. Schools average a start time of 7 a.m., which is at least an hour earlier than most professional jobs. Students who work in retail or food service may not end their shifts until at least 9 or 10 p.m.

Actually, Spain held a “National Siesta Championship” a few years ago … in which a 62-year-old won 1,000 Euro for his napping skills in a busy Madrid mall.
