Do you know the story behind this popular Fourth of July sweet treat?
“The Bomb Pop was first invented by D.S. Abernethy and James S. Merritt, of Merritt Foods, on July 30, 1955, in Kansas City, Missouri. This invention occurred at the outset of the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union (modern-day Russia) when the situation was heating up as the two world powers began to consider a nuclear war. It seems almost poetic that amidst the threat of nuclear warfare, Abernethy and Merritt came up with a frozen treat to cool down temperaments all over the nation. The pop was shaped like a bomb with six fins, hence the name Bomb Pop, and its color scheme reflected the patriotic zeitgeist of America during the Cold War. Its star shape is also reminiscent of star-shaped rocket fireworks, which is apt for Independence Day celebrations, too.”
Go grab a box on June 29, National Bomb Pop Day, to enjoy over the 4th!

“The New York Life Company’s Building in Kansas City is significant architecturally and historically as a fine example of fashionable American architecture of the 1880’s and a superb manifestation of a particular period in the growth of Kansas City. Its significance is heightened by the fact that it was designed by the famous New York architectural firm, McKim, Mead & White whose practice is recognized as one of the main influential forces in the United States’ architecture of the turn of the century.” The construction site for the building, a 160 X 120-foot plot on the corner of Ninth and what was then Amarette Streets, was purchased on Tuesday, December 13, 1886, for $373,000.00. It was the largest real estate transfer ever made in Kansas City to that date and was procured with the first New York capital to be invested in the city. Construction began early in January 1887 and was terminated in 1890. When completed at the cost of $1,000,000.00, it was the largest and tallest office building in Kansas City.” https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63819305

“During the Depression, while most other cities were suffering, “Tom’s Town” expanded. Mayor Tom Pendergast’s 10 Year Plan funded some significant construction projects that kept the City’s economy afloat, including a number of great examples of Art Deco design: the 29 story City Hall, the former Jackson County Courthouse, Fidelity Bank and Trust and Municipal Auditorium.”

"When a number of railways and the first bridge across the Missouri River were completed after the Civil War, the city’s population boomed. With the increased population came downtown development, and the wealthy built their mansion’s on Quality Hill. The City Market at 4th and Walnut was the center of trade and where people gathered to buy and sell goods, while the West Bottoms was the center of the burgeoning cattle industry, including stockyards, warehouses and packing houses."

Today and everyday, we honor and remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
