Mail for these good girls! Achiever Dog for Kimma, and Rally Advanced for Sonya!

08/01/2018

It's been two years since Kimma was diagnosed with meningitis. She recently had her yearly follow up with the neurologist, and he said that she's doing great! We are always looking for fun new ways to work on fitness and conditioning, so we brought the ladder back out of hiding and are working on front feet both directions, and back feet both directions side to side. This is our second session doing those! The up and back she's known for a while now :P

Go Jari! Little guy is now a medical detection dog! :D

So thrilled with the crew after this weekend!!! Yesterday we did some WCRL Rally and we got the following:

Bubbles - 2 Intro legs with a 2nd and 3rd place (the extra ribbon for her is a "First Qualifying Leg" ribbon!)

Jari - 1 Level 1 Q with a 1st place and his RL1 title, then a Level 2 Q with a 2nd place

Sonya - 1 Level 1 Q with a 2nd place (to Jari!) and her RL1 title, then a Level 2 Q with a 3rd place

Kimma - 2 Level 3 Qs, both with 1st places, giving her her RL3

Then today I took Kimma and Sonya to an AKC Rally trial and we got the following:

Sonya - Finished her RA title with a 2nd place, then got another 2nd place on a bumper leg

Kimma - Her first 2 Master Qs

Super proud!!!

Jari had a great day yesterday at the Performance Scent Dogs trial hosted by myself (Boundless Canine) and Kindred Companions! He qualified in all of the runs he did, and placed in them, too!!

06/25/2018

I'm lucky that my dogs can sometimes come to work with me and help me out with community engagement stuff. Today Jari got to go with me to one of the summer camps! We talked all about different jobs that dogs can do to help people, what I do as an Animal Control Officer, and he got to show off some of his tricks! Plus at the end, everyone got to pet him ❀️

Thankful to have such an amazing boy 😍

Sorry we've been so busy lately! Lots of good stuff going on. πŸ˜„

Here's a quick Kimma search from our Boundless Canine Scent Club meeting this evening. It was hot, but the dogs did great anyway! Lots of water breaks πŸ™‚

So proud of Jari for this search! He got a Pronounced designation on this one

05/23/2018

Good dog, Jari

Today's is a little different, and super long. But worth the read!

I want to talk about failure.

OH NO! Not the "f" word!!!

YES! That very thing that we all work so tirelessly to avoid.

I'm a perfectionist - I always have been. Even though I've always worked hard, for most things, I've been able to realize dreams and achieve goals. Until I got in to dogs!

WOAH what a change! Especially with "my" breed!

I have learned more about failure in my past 7 years in dog sports/being involved with working dogs than I had during my previous 25 years of life. (Now you all know how old I am :P )

I have cried, I have been frustrated, I have "given up." I've been mad at my dogs (obviously without merit), and even more mad at myself.

No matter how much we train and proof, they have off days, as do we. Sometimes, they just don't wanna, and sometimes we don't wanna, either!

There are setbacks. Sometimes they can even come after a period of awesomeness. Hard decisions are made to pull dogs from certain things that they are just not enjoying.

I have learned that it really is fine to fail. I used to tell myself it was but didn't believe it. But after competing in a ton of trials in various sports, working with so many dogs and handlers, judging quite a few trials, and running and attending seminars with some of the best in my sports, I realize that it is true.

Today I woke up really early. It was miserable out. Cold and rainy. The thought of being outside all day at an NW1 trial was not super awesome. But I got up, got myself ready (packed towels and extra shoes/socks!), and headed out the door with Jari.

For vehicles it was POURING out. But my boy did the thing, and got it. We celebrated, I told him he was the best dog ever, and he got hot dogs.

We went in to containers. He proceeded to step on EVERY SINGLE BOX in one of the rows (which is a fault....), and gave me such a convincing change of behavior and alert. Naturally I called it, and got a "no." OH MY GOODNESS. If this was even a year ago, I might have crumbled a bit. HOW could my dog give a false alert like that? We never actually were told where the hide was (I think they were upset we ruined so many boxes, which obviously was something he hadn't done before...), so we left "empty." You know what? He got hot dogs, he got told he's the best naughty dog ever. He did not give any cares.

I got stopped and asked how we did, and I said that we only got one. The other person's response? "Oh you were so happy! I figured you got them both!"

That was an interesting comment. Hmmm..

Fast forward to a few hours later. Little dude is happy as can be now - rain, mud, and he knows he's here for NOSE WORK! Plus HOT DOGS! What a great day he's having!

SUPER proud that he nailed exteriors with a Pronounced and NOT EVEN AN ATTEMPT AT POTTYING on the grass or trees in the search area - YAY!

Got to the waiting area before interiors, and we saw one of the volunteers we talked to a bit earlier in the morning before we had done containers. As usual, I was having Jari do tricks, and just having a fun time with him. She asked how we were doing, and I said that we missed containers but got the other two. Again, I was met with, "Oh I'm sorry! I thought you got them all so far by the way you are talking to him!"

OHHHHHH. Now I'm intrigued.

I thought back to how I used to feel when we failed. Upset. Sad. Mad. Frustrated. Of course my dogs would pick up on that.

Then I thought about how I felt at that moment. Content. Happy. COLD AND WET. Excited. Connected with my dog.

And I realized that I've made it.

Didn't matter what happened. I was there with my dog. He was having FUN. Yes, my reactive, "untrainable," never thought would be able to focus on anything outside ever, dog was doing so so well and having a blast.

Failure is a chance to grow. A chance to become even better than you were. It's a part of life, a part of dog sports.

We step on that line with our best dogs, and we leave with them at the end of the day.

We might only GET that day.

Live to learn and improve. Live to connect with your dog.

Jari and I went on to have another great search in interiors. We "only" went 3 for 4. But really, we won it all.

I've gotten several messages over the years from people asking for training advice. I'm generally very happy to give it, and have done remote sessions and in person sessions. But I am SO SO excited to announce that I will now be offering ONLINE CLASSES starting June 4!

This time around, I'll be doing a beginning nose work class, and a class all about impulse control. We will have working spots and auditing spots, and my colleague Molly will also be doing two classes! Check out the website below for more information, and don't hesitate to message me with any questions. There are only SIX working spots per class, so these will fill up quick!

Here is Kimma's NW1 from March 31! Interiors wasn't filmed due to space, but she passed that search, too! She was not acting like her normal self, hence some of the "fake outs" in the exteriors search (our first of the day). But she kept working for me, like she always does - what a great dog she is!
