Have you experienced disability discrimination or harm from ? You can share your experience to help make air travel saver for disabled passengers! ✈️
Flying with a disability shouldn't require risking your mobility or even your life, but that is currently the reality for disabled travelers. Far too many members of our community have faced damaged or lost wheelchairs/scooters, equipment mishandling, injury during a seat transfer while boarding or deplaning, lack of proper training for airport staff, discrimination by airline staff, and a number of other issues.
The good news? We can change that reality through our advocacy.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has proposed a new rule to improve safety and dignity for air travelers with disabilities, and have requested comments. Check out the proposed rule here: https://bit.ly/4du68dH
Get involved by sharing your experiences with AAPD: https://bit.ly/3UOn1sv. We'll share your stories with DOT to advocate for a stronger regulation.
Together, let's make air travel safer and more accessible for everyone!

“If Hochul is truly concerned with growing costs of CDPAP and other home care programs, she should stop handing private insurance companies billions a year to mis-manage home care — saving New York over $3 billion annually,” O’Malley said. “Instead of cutting out these expensive middle men, the Governor is proposing over a billion in cuts … which will force tens of thousands of older adults and disabled New Yorkers into nursing homes and institutions.”
New York has not yet passed its state budget for fiscal year 2025. Home care advocates have voiced strong opposition to the cuts set by the executive budget proposal.
“This budget puts New York’s Medicaid program at a crossroads,” O’Malley testified during a Jan. 23 budget hearing. “We can make decisions that will move the system forward or break it. Let’s choose the former.”
Advocates slam ‘irresponsible and cruel’ cuts to New York home care services Home care supporters remain up in arms following last month’s release of New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s executive budget for fiscal year 2025.

NCD seeks public comment on wheelchair users' experiences with ground transportation
The National Council on Disability requests public comment during NCD's Feb. 8 Council meeting on Zoom.
Please share your experience(s) in obtaining wheelchair accessible taxis or rideshares such as Uber and Lyft:
- If you requested a wheelchair accessible van (WAV) through a taxi company, did the company have a WAV? If the company did not have WAVs in its fleet, did the taxi service offer to provide you a WAV through a different company? Was the price comparable to a non-accessible taxi?
- If you requested a WAV from a rideshare company, did the company have a WAV? If not, were you referred to a service that did? Was the price comparable to a non-accessible rideshare?
- Have you filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice or the U.S. Department of Transportation about discrimination by a taxi company or a rideshare regarding lack of WAVs? If so, what was the result?
- Is paratransit available in your neighborhood? What are the pros and cons of using this service? What should be changed?
