A 2020 report from the Return on Disability Group, stated that 90% of companies claim to prioritize diversity, while only 4% consider disability in those initiatives.
We want to bring attention to the importance of emphasizing accessibility (A) in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) missions. This post highlights a few resources that discuss accessibility, and provide examples in action.

“This year’s Day of Silence theme is My Silence, My Action.”
The Gay, Le***an & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) Day of Silence is a national student-led demonstration where LGBTQ students and across the country—and the world—take a vow of silence to protest the harmful effects of harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ people in schools.
Every April, students go through the school day without speaking, ending the day with Breaking the Silence rallies and events to share their experiences and bring attention to ways their schools and communities can become more inclusive.
This year, individuals are choosing silence as a reclamation of the forced erasure of LGBTQ* youth.

"Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me
'Eat in the kitchen,'..I, too, am America."
Excerpt from “I, Too” by Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes was a major poet and central figure in the Harlem Renaissance who captured Black life and its frustrations and joys in his poetry.
Born in Joplin, Missouri in 1902, it was the writer’s many years in Harlem that would come to characterize his work.
Hughes focused squarely on the lives of working-class Black Americans, delicately dismantling clichés and arriving at a genuine portrayal of the people he knew best. His poem, "I, Too," is considered one of his most notable works. Hughes uses metaphor to defy the notion of second-class citizenship and to underscore the narrator’s vision of full citizenship for African Americans.
But Hughes’s body of work, steeped as it was in stories of everyday life, was not without its critics. Some thought his approach, especially his use of the fictional character Jesse B. Semple (a.k.a. “Simple”), portrayed an unattractive view of Black American life. However, many believe Hughes brought the stories of those he encountered in Harlem to life through his work.

Happy Passover!
The eight-day Jewish holiday of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 23rd of the Hebrew month of Nissan, April 15 - 23, 2022. The Seder meal is held on the first two nights (the 15th & 16th).
Passover (Pesach) commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. Pesach is observed by avoiding leaven, and highlighted by the Seder meals that include four cups of wine, eating matzah and bitter herbs, and retelling the story of the Exodus.

“It is never too late to be what you might have been.”
-George Eliot
Mary Ann Evans, known by her pen name ‘George Eliot,’ was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She used a male pen name to ensure her works were taken seriously in an era when female authors were usually associated with romantic novels.

Gender is not what people look like to other people; it is what we know ourselves to be.
