According to a 1987 exhibition catalog by the Library Company of Philadelphia and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, this delicious creation dates back to the early 20th century, born from the simple yet genius combination of frizzled beef, onions, and cheese nestled in a small loaf of bread.
The tale of its invention is a slice of Philadelphia history, with Pat and Harry Olivieri often celebrated for their culinary innovation. These brothers, initially hot dog stand owners, stumbled upon greatness in the early 1930s. Legend has it that while experimenting with chopped beef and grilled onions on an Italian roll, a passing cab driver caught a whiff, tried a bite, and the rest is history. He advised the Olivieri brothers to ditch the hot dogs and stick to this new sensation. And so, they did, right near South Philadelphia's Italian Market.
