Another two day weekend volunteering for the free medical, dental, and vision clinic with R.A.M. USA, this time in lovely rural Emporia, Virginia!
A little sad that there is still such need.
I had a talented scribe đť and had fun volunteering with physician colleagues as well as some incredible nurses and med students. Our makeshift clinic was in the library of the Greensville High School. There was also a womenâs care trailer, a huge row of dental tents, and an eye clinic plus trailer where glasses were made immediately for patients.

Please consider donating to RAMUSA.ORG this holiday season! They offer free medical, dental, and vision care to rural residents throughout many states in the US, especially KY, VA, WV, and TN. This weekend we offered free care from the Mayfield, KY, high school and treated over 230 patients, most of whom lost everything in the tornado that destroyed their town two years ago. We opened at 6 a.m. and people were already lined up at the door. Our clinic was the h.s. band room and on Sunday we had an all women medical crew!
Connecting to nature as part of feeling wellâhappy Fall!
Opinion | Go Outside, Sink Your Feet Into the Dirt and Engage With the World The natural world has stories to tell if you listen closely.
When I trained as a trauma informed professional coach with Lodestar, they repeatedly taught that âconnection mitigates traumaâ. When we connect we can start the healing process. This is also a deeply held principle of Lifestyle Medicine: that loneliness is definitely a health issue, and one that can be prevented. Think of someone you know who may be feeling lonely today and reach out to them with a visit or call, as we are currently in a âloneliness pandemicâ.
Opinion | If Loneliness Is an Epidemic, How Do We Treat It? It canât be cured; it can be treated.

There are so many options! It is helpful to look at the evidence and analyze the pros and cons, as well as talk to a healthcare professional. Itâs not necessary to be âon a dietâ your whole life but itâs helpful to add more rainbow veggies and fruits, whole grains and beans, and consider lower salt options.

How about stopping the production and use of some of these items that produce PFAS, such as nonstick pans?
New tech could one day scrub âforever chemicalsâ from your tap water While there are already developed technologies to remove PFAS from water, experts say these existing approaches have several major limitations.
Itâs not too late to start something new, whether itâs a new way to tend to yourself, a new career (or retirement đ), or a new way of seeing the world around youâŚ.
There is nothing to fear in the act of beginning. More often than not it knows the journey ahead better than we ever could. Perhaps the art of harvesting the secret riches of our lives is best achieved when we place profound trust in the act of beginning. Risk might be our greatest ally. To live a truly creative life, we always need to cast a critical look at where we presently are, attempting always to discern where we have become stagnant and where new beginning might be ripening. There can be no growth if we do not remain open and vulnerable to what is new and different. I have never seen anyone take a risk for growth that was not rewarded a thousand times over.
