With deep sorrow, we share the passing of our dear friend and former colleague, Blythe Jamieson. Blythe was hired as Sayre's first full-time school counselor. She guided Sayre's faculty in developing the human development curriculum and was instrumental in implementing Sayre's Community Matters initiatives.
“Blythe was an extraordinary support to our students, families, and faculty,” said Head of School Stephen Manella. “Through her leadership, the scope of counseling services expanded, and she spearheaded the school’s wellness initiatives. With her Golden Doodle, Tashi, by her side, she brought a mix of care, creativity, expertise, discretion, professionalism, and humor to our community as she advocated for our well-being.”
Blythe not only cared for us but also helped us understand how to care for each other. Blythe retired in 2018, after serving 16 years at Sayre.
She will be sorely missed. Please keep her family and friends in your thoughts.
Sayre School mourns the sudden and tragic loss of Sayre alum, Nabeel Aslam ’20. Nabeel, son of Dr. Azhar Aslam and Dr. Uzma Shireen Aslam and brother to Sana Aslam ‘16, passed away early this morning after a fatal car accident.
There are no words to describe the sadness of this news. Nabeel was a dear friend, teammate, and student. “Nabeel had a way about him that was uplifting to anyone that was near him,” said Head Basketball Coach Rob Goodman. “He had a great smile and loved being around his friends as much as they loved being with him. He will be missed dearly.”
This is a great loss to our Sayre family. Please keep the Aslam family in your prayers.
Janazah Prayer and burial will take place on Monday, July 22 at 5:00 PM at Bluegrass Memorial Garden Cemetery at 4915 Harrodsburg Rd, Nicholasville.
Condolence visitation will be on Tuesday at Masjid Bilal between Asr and Maghrib prayers. As Iqamah will be at 5:45 PM.
SAVE THE DATE 🏈🎉

Congratulations to Melissa Shane ’21, who was selected to represent Kentucky at the 2024 Henry Clay College Student Congress, a bipartisan policy summer program to study the dynamics of the policy process, diplomacy, and modern leadership. Only one student from each state is selected.
A native of Lexington, Kentucky, Melissa is currently a junior at Emory University studying political science end public policy analysis. She will participate in the congress this May.
Melissa says that Mr. Snowden's history class at Sayre was a big inspiration in her pursuit of public policy studies!
Thank you 👏 to Katie McCarthy Barrett '10, for serving as our guest speaker at the Senior Breakfast.
A student-athlete at Sayre and at the University of Kentucky, Katie is now vice president of sales and merchandising and co-owner of STANTT, a custom men’s clothing company based in New York. 👔
Katie shared her experiences as an intern with interior design firm Hubbuch & Company during her senior year at Sayre, which she says helped lay the foundation for a career in fashion.
“I wish every school would do this for their senior class,” says Katie. “This is such a one-of-a-kind place.”
The Sayre School community is deeply saddened by the passing of Louis Lee Haggin III. Mr. Haggin, member of the Sayre School Class of 1954, served with great distinction on Sayre School's Board of Trustees from 1974-1977, which includes his leadership role as Board Chairman.
Mr. Haggin, a native of California who moved to Kentucky in 1939, began his studies at Sayre in 1944. His parent's decision to send him to Sayre was a source of great pride for him. In a previous interview, he fondly recalled the curriculum, small class sizes, sports, daily school activities, the honor system, and the dress code, all of which played a significant role in his parent's decision. He also spoke highly of David A. Sayre's commitment to educating women and his teachers' dedication to their students.
As the BloodHorse article aptly states, "Haggin never sought accolades for his contributions, preferring to remain behind the scenes." This humility was a hallmark of Mr. Haggin's character. His family, too, has been a pillar of support for Sayre, with numerous Haggin descendants attending the school and serving on the Board of Trustees. Their multi-generational loyalty and generosity have been instrumental in shaping the Sayre community.
Head of School, Stephen Manella states, "I enjoyed the first of many conversations with Mr. Haggin in 2012, and our exchanges always touched upon his insights on the history of the school, his appreciation for the positive impact Sayre has on the lives of students, and his steadfast commitment to and belief in our future. He was one of a kind and it was an honor to know him."
Mr. Haggin's legacy of making a difference for Sayre and the children it serves is still alive today. We appreciate his fond support of our 170-year-old institution.
Graveside services will be held March 8 at 11 a.m. at the Lexington Cemetery. The family requests memorial contributions be sent to Sayre School, in memory of Louis Lee Haggin III.
