When should you bring your child for their first orthodontic evaluation?

Because early treatment is preventive, we like to see children for their first evaluation at age 7. 💡

They may be a candidate for preventive Phase I treatment. The goal of Phase I treatment is to help the jaw develop in a way that will accommodate all of the permanent teeth and improve the way the upper and lower jaws fit together.

We only treat those kids who exhibit a significant need. Children often exhibit early signs of jaw problems as they grow and develop. An upper jaw that is growing ahead of the lower jaw or is too narrow can be recognized at an early age and corrected. A lower jaw developing into an underbite is another common problem that is best treated as early as possible.

Other common issues, such as crowding, can successfully be treated early to prevent the need to extract permanent teeth later. In many cases, if early treatment is NOT initiated, there is no way to treat the problem without surgical intervention later.
