Does your child suck their thumb? Let’s help them stop!

This patient presented with an open bite creating issues with chewing and speech. After years of thumb sucking, the patient’s palette has narrowed. This also creates crowding, not enough room for all of the adult teeth to erupt into the mouth properly.

Step 1: The patient and their family must commit to stopping the thumb sucking habit. We have
multiple options available from a highly effective nail polish to custom made appliances. We are so
proud of this patient because they were to stop their habit nearly completely within 9 months and can now start treatment to expand their arches to undo the damage caused by thumb sucking.

Step 2: Phase 1 Treatment. Early intervention treatment allows us to expand the patient’s palette. By expanding we gain room for all of the adult teeth to fully erupt. Simultaneously the front teeth move back, reducing the excessive flare. Braces may be used in conjunction to close the open bite even more.

When completed with Phase 1 treatment, this patient will be able to chew normally, improve their speech and keep all of their adult teeth (avoiding future extractions of adult teeth as a teen).

We believe in an orthopedic approach to treatment and early treatment for patients like this can completely change their future!
