Thanks to my lovely neighbor Tina Abrego, we have another outstanding book to share through our little library! Tina purchased 15 copies of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie to share with the community. Thank you, Tina!❤️ Here's what she had to say about the book:
"This is a semi-autobiographical novel about a teen growing up on a Spokane Indian reservation! It's been a teacher's top choice for young adults for years, though now it is banned in some schools. It's a bittersweet novel with strong themes about race, poverty, personal identity, bullying, and the overall struggles of young adulthood! I've read this book at least 3 times and always gain a deeper understanding of it each time! My whole family and many extended family members have read this gem of a book, all equally loving it as much as I did!!"
Please comment here if you want a copy, and I will send you the details.

This week, the Thompson Family Little Free Library received several large book donations on our porch. Thank you! Yesterday, before I headed to work, I dropped off eight boxes full of books (approximately 800) at 15 Little Free Libraries in the Chicagoland area that were nearly empty. When you donate books to our little free library, please rest assured that we will get all the books in the right hands to enjoy them. Thanks for all of your support!📚🕮📖

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This one was five stars for me. Democracy Awakening by Heather Cox Richardson.
I'd love to hear what you're reading this week!
Goodreads synopsis:
From historian and author of the popular daily newsletter LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN, a vital narrative that explains how America, once a beacon of democracy, now teeters on the brink of autocracy -- and how we can turn back.

In the midst of the impeachment crisis of 2019, Heather Cox Richardson launched a daily Facebook essay providing the historical background of the daily torrent of news. It soon turned into a newsletter and its readership ballooned to more than 2 million dedicated readers who rely on her plainspoken and informed take on the present and past in America.

In Democracy Awakening , Richardson crafts a compelling and original narrative, explaining how, over the decades, a small group of wealthy people have made war on American ideals. By weaponizing language and promoting false history they have led us into authoritarianism -- creating a disaffected population and then promising to recreate an imagined past where those people could feel important again. She argues that taking our country back starts by remembering the elements of the nation’s true history that marginalized Americans have always upheld. Their dedication to the principles on which this nation was founded has enabled us to renew and expand our commitment to democracy in the past. Richardson sees this history as a roadmap for the nation’s future.

Richardson’s talent is to wrangle our giant, meandering, and confusing news feed into a coherent story that singles out what we should pay attention to, what the precedents are, and what possible paths lie ahead. In her trademark calm prose, she is realistic and optimistic about the future of democracy. Her command of history allows her to pivot effortlessly from the Founders to the abolitionists to Reconstruction to Goldwater to Mitch McConnell, highlighting the political legacies of the New Deal, the lingering fears of socialism, the death of the liberal consensus and birth of “movement conservatism.”

Many books tell us what has happened over the last five years. Democracy Awakening explains how we got to this perilous point, what our history really tells us about ourselves, and what the future of democracy can be.

Well, the good news is people want to read the books I placed in our little library for Black History Month! The bad news is, now we're nearly empty (the 1st photo was taken today, the 2nd was taken yesterday). If you have any books by Black authors to share, we'd be so appreciative. You can leave them in the little library or on our covered porch. Much thanks!

If you haven't read this one yet, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. It will stay with me forever.
Here's the Goodreads synopsis:
"The new novel from the bestselling, National Book Award-winning, Oprah Book Club-picked, Barack Obama favourite James McBride.

In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighbourhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows.

As these characters' stories overlap and deepen, it becomes clear how much the people who live on the margins struggle and what they must do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened on Chicken Hill and the part the town's white establishment played in it, McBride shows us that even in dark times, it is love and community-heaven and earth-that sustain us."

We added all new books today for everyone to enjoy! It's a very balanced collection, with some brain food and a little fluff.🤓📖📚
As you clean out your book collections before the holidays, please know that we are grateful and accept all donations (books, small toys, and small games) on our covered front porch. We work hard to keep our library filled with bestsellers all year, and we can't do that without you! In addition, I fill empty little libraries all over Lake and Cook County as I travel around for work. Thanks for considering the idea, and please let me know if you need our address. Happy reading!
