Rest easy brother

With a heavy heart, we announce the untimely loss of a longtime employee, Captain Terryson Jackson, who passed away this morning, August 28, 2023, after a BSO Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services helicopter crashed in Pompano Beach. Captain Jackson proudly served the people of Broward County for 19 years. He began his fire rescue career in March 2004 in Deerfield Beach and joined the BSO family in October 2011 when the two agencies merged.

As a flight paramedic, he impacted the community daily, providing critical patients with the highest pre-hospital care. He consistently showed an unmatched passion for the job. He always provided expert care, compassion and reassurance to those during their most significant time of need.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Jackson family during this difficult time. Sheriff Gregory Tony is honored to posthumously promote Captain Terryson Jackson to Battalion Chief.

His BSO family will forever carry on his legacy.

Happy Birthday George!

Forever in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you for all of the generous gifts and donations to our department over the years.

It is with a great sense of sadness to report the loss of our longtime friend and resident of Lighthouse Point, Dr. James C. Acheson, husband of Susan Nelson Acheson, who passed away at the age of 86 on Sunday, April 2nd. Mr. Acheson was from Port Huron Michigan, but over the past 30-years, would share his time here in Lighthouse Point. Jim was the grandson of inventor and Thomas Edison protégé, Dr. Edward Goodrich Acheson, an inventor and business man in the field of chemistry, who founded Acheson Colloids Co., later becoming the massive and international Acheson Industries. Jim worked at the family business, and eventually went on to become the chairman of the board, before selling the corporation in 1998. Following the sale, Jim ran two organizations, Acheson Ventures, and the James Acheson Foundation. Mr. Acheson was a humble man and philanthropist who enjoyed making a positive difference in his communities. He would go on to donate significant sums of money to charitable organizations in Port Huron MI, Lighthouse Point, and other organizations in Broward County. Locally, we will forever be grateful for his remarkable generosity and financial support for special project at the City of Lighthouse Point Police, Fire, Library, and Recreation Department.

Congratulations Detective Tomasi!!

Congratulations to Detective Michael Tomasi, he has been selected as the 2022 Lighthouse Point Police Department “Officer of the Year”. Detective Michael Tomasi has been with the Lighthouse Point Police Department since 2014, and has consistently been one of our top performers year after year. In 2022, Detective Tomasi received multiple agency commendations. As a detective, he played an instrumental role in the clearance of 44 criminal investigations, including 14 physical arrests and contributed greatly to our agency achieving our highest recorded crime clearance rate. A number of his investigations included high profile cases, that required extensive work, use of varying types of police intelligence gathering methods, electronics, video surveillance, and coordination with other law enforcement and county agencies. Equally important is that he demonstrates an outstanding work ethic, with the highest regard for quality investigative standards. Congratulations again Detective Tomasi and thank you for your service!

Yesterday, October25,2022, a fellow firefighter with Broward county and his girlfriend, were critically injured in a tanker fire on I-95. The tanker truck overturned and ruptured on I-95 in Delray Beach causing a large fire and causing 5 injuries. Bryan and his girlfriend were riding as passengers in an Uber when they got caught in the mayhem of accident and flames. Bryan was able to extricate himself and then help his girlfriend out of the vehicle. Both suffered severe burns. Bryan and his girlfriend Sue were both transported to Delray Beach Medical center. Sue was subsequently flown to Jackson in Miami. Both have a long road to recovery. A go fund me account has been set up to help with this troubling time. If you would like to donate you can access the link here.

The kids at Bright Minds Academy had a blast learning about escape routes and gathering points, dangers of playing with fire, stop drop and roll, staying low and crawling to exits, and not being afraid of Firefighters in full gear calling out to them. Then they got to in the fire truck! Not surprisingly, their favorite part. 😀

Today marks 10 years since we lost our brother Lt. Kevin Horkheimer to cancer.

He was the epitome of the fire service and always lend a helping hand to others in the community. He was well-known in the community for coaching for the city sports leagues and assisting with many organizations.

His tenacity and spirit is something that everyone should always strive to be! Forever a member of LHPFR

As we all have our thoughts and prayers going out to the people affected by Hurricane Ian, I am posting about one of our own. One of our LHP firefighters lives in Pine Island, which only road access is from Cape Coral. The bridges and roads are completely destroyed as well as many homes and business on Pine Island. Our member’s home received much damage and she will not be able to live in her home for months if not for a year or more. She is displaced and can any help would be very much appreciated. As she is limited to the things to live on a daily basis, including clothes and personal belongings that she was able to fit into her car prior to the storm, her main concern is for her neighbors on Pine Island that are still stuck there with no power or access. She can use any monetary donations to help her adjust to her displacement. Her actual requests are as follows: water, ice, batteries, non perishable foods, and toiletries such as toilet paper for her neighbors. If anyone would like to help you can donate goods to the LHP fire station or you can DM me directly. You can also donate directly on our Firefighter website at lhpffbenvolent.com. We are a 501c3 non profit and donations may be deducted from income tax. If anyone would like to assist in the efforts of bringing goods to the area, that would be very helpful as well. Thank you for all of your help. **note** the photo of the home half in the water is not hers. It is a neighbors home and only posted to show some of the severity of the damage. The aerial photo is of the small town of Matlacha which is along the causeway to Pine Island.

Stay safe out there!

Hurricane Ian has now intensified to a Category 3 hurricane. Broward County has been placed under a Tropical Storm Watch and a Tornado Watch has been issued until 5:00 pm today. King tides will play a role in possible flooding. Although LHP remains outside of the cone, we must still remain alert and prepare as much as possible for inclement weather and flooding. Broward County Public Schools announced that district offices and schools will be closed tomorrow, 9/28/2022.

UPDATE: Although South Florida is now outside the cone of concern for Tropical Storm (soon to be Hurricane) Ian, it is too soon to let our guard down. Regardless of the storm's path, Lighthouse Point and all of South Florida must continue to brace for high winds and torrential flooding. Stay updated by following us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or NextDoor.
