The United States Constitution is the supreme law of the United States and the oldest written national constitution still in use. It was written in 1787, ratified in 1788, and has been in effect since 1789. The Constitution's main objectives were to create a government that could act on a national level, while also protecting fundamental rights.

Structure
The Constitution is made up of a Preamble, seven articles, and 27 amendments. The first 10 amendments are known as the Bill of Rights.
