This August, observe National Eye Exam Month by learning about ways to keep your vision clear and healthy. As we age, getting a baseline eye exam can detect early signs of disease or damage to your eyes. Ophthalmologists recommend periodic eye exams every 2-4 years from the ages of 40 to 65, and every 1-2 years after the age of 65. While most symptoms are often disregarded, getting a simple checkup and following a doctor’s orders can greatly lower risks of more severe and future damage, and you can continue to enjoy healthy vision.

On this date in 1908, the Lincoln Star newspaper published the following quote from then U.S. President nominee William Jennings Bryan: "The Christian Record, published in College View, has for many years been a welcome visitor to many blind readers. The journal is published without profit, as a large number of copies are furnished free to those unable to pay for it, and should receive the encouragement of charitably inclined persons. It is therefore with much pleasure that I give my hearty endorsement of the work."

Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month is observed each year in August to raise awareness about the importance of healthy vision and preventing eye injuries.
It’s reported that 1 in 4 children experience vision problems, and 1 in 20 are at risk of losing their eyesight permanently. This is a great time of year to encourage parents and caregivers to schedule regular eye exams for early detection and proper treatment.

Pastor Bradshaw sees the strangest creature fall from a tree. What is it? Father is out of work—and money. Then he gets a flat tire. Can blessings come from a flat tire? Emma and Irene sell Christian books all summer to raise money to attend college. Then, a thief demands their money. Will someone come to their rescue? Mike, the garbage collector, rescues Mrs. Jones’ life savings from the dump. Years later, he gets a big surprise! Two catbird chicks need a new home when the tree their nest is in gets cut down. Enjoy these stories and more in this issue of The Children’s Friend.

Introducing our 2024 Anne Lowe Scholarship recipients:
Charli Strawn was born blind in a Chinese orphanage, and adopted into an Alabama family who encouraged her to explore the world like her sighted peers. Excelling academically with the aid of adaptive technology, Charli faced challenges head-on, including proving doubters wrong by succeeding in a "highly visual" honors chemistry class. As the first blind student at her high school, she led the marching band to superior ratings as Drum Major. Charli's active church life and partnership with her guide dog, Soldier, reflect her community involvement. Majoring in Information Systems Management with a minor in Psychology at Auburn University, Charli aims to improve employment and living standards for the visually impaired through technology, aspiring to work for companies like Google or Microsoft to advocate for inclusivity and bridge the digital divide.
