He had meticulously brushed the edges, being careful not to get color where it wasn’t to be. The diamond pattern in contrasting black and white, was bold and big and precise. He had thought while each line was drawn about many things, except the obvious. He felt the cold wall against his back, the blank floor now colored in the most impressive harlequin design. It seemed less dazzling and more daunting than anything else. When you paint yourself into corners, the desired outcome you wished to achieve is anything but desirable.

He weighed his options…which were limited. He could sit and wait for the paint to dry or he could walk across it. He was not the best waiter. His mind wandered to all of the other things that he could be doing, while time lazily drifted by. Time, you see, never goes by quickly when you are waiting. Minutes grow legs and feet that drag their toes in the sand. Lollygagging. No. Waiting was not going to work.

There are times that “do overs” happen. Because mistakes happen. The best intentions go awry. Plans are derailed. Paint gets mussed and scuffed when it isn’t yet dry. Just because it does. That’s why there are signs posted which we never heed. And the overwhelming urge comes over us to touch the object that wears “Wet Paint”. We are humans.

The good part in all of this, is that you probably will not find yourself in the same corner, painted in, twice. You will have learned a lesson. Lessons aren’t learned when things go right. But when they don’t. You will think twice when you pick up a brush to paint a floor. You will have that lightbulb moment reminding you that rooms have corners and most times, only one door to exit from. You will remember the paint you got on your shoes and the prints that were left in your wake. And you will smile. Usually after a couple of weeks you will.

And if by chance you have painted yourself into that corner, three games down, you can always dig deep and still play on. Win or lose, these are moments you will never forget.
