The story of the Magi, or Wise Men, is famous and mysterious, relatively short in length. It raises intriguing questions: Who were those “Magi from the east” who traveled far seeking the “newborn king of the Jews”? How did they know about this king? Why did they seek him? And how was he connected to the star they followed?

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph | DOLR.org The Catechism of the Catholic Church quotes the 1964 homily of Pope Paul VI on the feast of the Holy Family: “May Nazareth teach us what family life is, its communion of love, its austere and simply beauty, and its sacred and inviolable character.” (no. 533)
Today is the feast of the Holy Innocents, Martyrs.
Herod “the Great,” king of Judea, was fearful of any threat to his throne. In Matthew 2: 1-8 we learn how far he was willing to go to eliminate any threat to his power.
Herod was “greatly troubled” when wise men from the East came asking about “the newborn king of the Jews,” whose star they had seen. They were told that the Jewish Scriptures named Bethlehem as the place where the Messiah would be born. Herod told them to report back so that he could also “do him homage.” They found Jesus, offered him their gifts, and warned by an angel, avoided Herod on their way home. Joseph, Mary and Jesus escaped to Egypt.
In his fury, Herod “ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under.”
