It is very important to protect the front teeth.
When you lose back teeth, all the pressure of chewing is now on the front teeth which can cause splaying and fractures.

This is called the domino effect for missing teeth.

We need to replace missing teeth to help disperse pressure of chewing. Our back teeth/molars are made for chewing and grinding and do the bulk of chewing our food. The front teeth are only meant for biting or incising; to make food smaller to chew in the back.

what happens when we don't replace missing teeth?

This is called drifting. The teeth will tilt into the missing areas. Also the opposing tooth can hyper-erupt meaning it will descend into the gap area. This can cause root structure to show and become very sensitive.
