Sharing because this place is special. Many have visited SE Arizona for birding trips and if they have, they most certainly have visited Ash Canyon Bird Sanctuary! In 2019 I had the opportunity to visit. It is an absolutely amazing place and one of the few places to reliably view Lucifer Hummingbirds! That's where I have seen the only 2 I have ever seen (a male and female) STRIKING birds! The hillside overlooking the Sanctuary is up for sale. This fundraiser is to allow the Sanctuary to purchase the land, expand the sanctuary and ensure homes won't over look the Sanctuary, keeping it to be the magical place that it is and protecting the sanctuary and surrounding habits. Seriously though folks, red dye is not necessary in hummingbird nectar, the red on the feeder attracts the hummingbirds. Based on evidence from hummingbird banders, rehabilitators, and ornithologists, red dye has the potential to have very harmful effects on hummingbird's health. Please just use the 4 parts water/1 part sugar mix. This mix most closely simulates natural flower nectar. Not only is it healthier for the hummingbirds, but it's easier on your pocketbook. The hummingbirds will thank you for it!

Every year between the big spring migration push and mid-June when juvenile hummingbirds begin to show up at feeders we get the question "Where are all the hummingbirds?" Many folks tend to remember the great "swarms" of hummingbirds during fall migration and are alarmed by the "lack" of hummingbirds during nesting season. The truth is every single year there is a lull starting sometime in May through mid June at our feeders. Migrating hummingbirds have moved on to points north and only our summer residents remain. Those residents are about the serious business of breeding and nesting. Males are defending fertile patches of nectar producing flowers in areas with ample tiny insect prey. Females are busy with the business of building nests, egg laying and raising chicks. This takes a lot of protein from tiny insects to accomplish, so she is going to be hunting insects relentlessly to feed her chicks. If your yard does not provide appropriate nesting areas and an ample supply of insects you simply will not see many hummingbirds during the nesting season. As juveniles leave the nest and fall migration begins around mid July, numbers will steadily pick up through mid September and then begin to fall off again until the hummingbird visits become a trickle into October. To make your yard even more hummingbird friendly during nesting season (and during migration)plant native nectar producing flowers, and naive trees,vines and shrubs. This will provide nectar sources, roosting and nesting sites and attract the insects the hummingbirds need to survive. Maintain a pesticide free yard. Pesticides kill insects. Hummingbirds must have tiny insects to survive. Maintain a clean feeder with fresh nectar. Mold and spoiled nectar can cause sickness and even death especially for hummingbird chicks who's mother feeds them nectar from a dirty feeder. Provide a fresh water source. Google "diy hummingbird fountain" for some fun ideas! Keep cats indoors. Cats can easily catch adult hummingbirds. Chicks in nests and fledglings are absolutely helpless to flee.
While all bird species in North America are facing threats both natural and man-made, and many are declining, Ruby-throated Hummingbird populations are stable. The lack of birds at feeders during the annual spring lull is not an indication of a hidden disaster. Be patient, work to make your yard hummingbird friendly and they will come.

I never like to see people get scammed or hoodwinked. Please don't fall for the "Hummingbird House". They are available from local people to Amazon and Temu and lots of websites and stores in between. Hummingbirds are not cavity nesters and won't use them! They make cute ornaments, but that it all.
