Cookie deprecation: happening, not happeningโ€”it's enough to give anyone whiplash! ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ Google's latest U-turn has us all talking, so hereโ€™s our take:

Google just announced they're putting the brakes on third-party cookie deprecation plans, opting instead for a new Chrome feature that lets users decide on tracking across web browsing. ๐Ÿ’ป

Remember when Apple did this in 2021? Over 90% of users said โ€œno thanks,โ€ effectively ending app tracking on iOS devices.

As our CEO, Richard K. Howe, aptly puts it, โ€œCookie consent is cookie deprecation by another name.โ€ All roads lead to the same destination: a cookie-less future, but now with a more gradual decline rather than an abrupt end.

With privacy measures becoming the norm, reversing them is not ideal. If Appleโ€™s experience is any indicator, we can expect similar trends with Google.

Cookie-less ๐Ÿช targeting & audience building were hot topics at the Cannes Festival, but hereโ€™s a tough bite to swallow: cookie-less doesnโ€™t mean ID-free!

Cookie-less targeting can still use alternative identifiers like IP addresses.

Truly ID-free targeting makes decisions without relying on any identifiers. At Inuvo, we use probabilistic methods based on bid request information, matching concepts and geolocation to our models using IntentKey AI. This allows us to be completely agnostic of whatever ID is present.
