Saint Mark Baptist Church
Saint Mark Baptist Church was founded in 1892. Phillip L. Pointer, Sr. is our Senior Pastor.
It is no question that homosexuality or one’s sexual orientation has become culture’s greatest moral and spiritual issue for the Christian community. Yet, the Church often avoids discussing this taboo topic. But what is God’s heart on the matter? Does God hate gay people? Join us for an engaging conversation that is sure to ground you and grow you up in your faith.

📖 Acts 6:8-15 | ‘It Be Your Own People’
When faced with those who mishandle us, God calls us to live graciously and powerfully, even in the face of devious intentions. Stephen shows us how:
1️⃣ Show Up
2️⃣ Grow Up
3️⃣ Glow Up
Disprove the false witnesses around you by developing a true witness within you. Don’t let past history control your destiny.
When the worship experience is just that good! 🙌🏽
You. Grow. Here.

SERMON NOTES 📝
Forward through Friction
Scripture: Acts 6:1-7
Central Truth: God uses times of relational tension to increase opportunities to serve and expand the effectiveness of Christians committed to community.
Key Takeaway: You and I become our best selves because God uses relational friction to improve us.

As a staff, we work each week to create a culture where the community can receive what they need to be restored…
But serving the community first means we make sure we have what WE need as servant-leaders to be holistically well too and thus prevent the deterioration of our physical and spiritual condition. That’s why we were glad to welcome Restoration Health in to our staff meeting to help bring wellness to the workplace.
We encourage each of you to find ways to improve your quality of life so that you serve well for the glory of God and the good of community.
You. Grow. Here. 🌱
Look at God! We’re still growing!
We mean it when we say You. Grow. Here. 🌱
On Saturday [8/3/24] we welcomed 11 new members who participated in Steps to Growth orientation and we also saw current members take the Steps to Growth class to familiarize themselves with the culture of this church community.
When we welcome new members, we are not just adding to our numbers; we are enriching our fellowship, bringing in fresh perspectives, and strengthening the body of Christ. Growth in membership is a sign of a healthy, vibrant church that is alive with the Holy Spirit. It means more hands to serve, more voices to praise, and more hearts united in the love of Jesus.
Let us commit to being a church that reaches out, invites in, and nurtures every soul who walks through our doors. Together, we can build a community that reflects God’s kingdom here on earth—a place of love, hope, and grace.
Let’s continue to grow, in faith and in number, for His glory!
We grow together both in-person and online…

Who knew FRICTION could be a positive thing?!
Our Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Phillip L. Pointer, Sr. taught us today [8/4/24] during his Sunday sermon that “a certain amount of friction is necessary for productivity and progress. It’s not the friction that’s the problem, it’s how you handle it!”
Friction is meant to move us forward! Amen?!

Our Hymn of the Month for August is “Holy, Holy, Holy” by Reginald Heber. Save these slides and learn it if you don’t already know this very popular hymn.
Reginald Heber was born in 1783 into a wealthy, educated family. He was a bright youth, translating a Latin classic into English verse by the time he was seven, entering Oxford at 17, and winning two awards for his poetry during his time there. After his graduation he became rector of his father's church in the village of Hodnet near Shrewsbury in the west of England where he remained for 16 years. He was appointed Bishop of Calcutta in 1823 and worked tirelessly for three years until the weather and travel took its toll on his health and he died of a stroke. Most of his 57 hymns, which include "Holy, Holy, Holy," are still in use today.
We resume our Reach Wider series as we enter August. Let's move "Forward with Friction" as we look at Acts 6:1-7. Steadfast faithfulness gets the job done. It's also first Sunday, so let us prepare to observe Communion together.
Prepare your head, heart, and hands with this guide. You can even find links to the songs for the day in the Saint Mark LR app, on the Prepare Worship section of the Learning Tab. Then let's gather together in person at 8, 10, and 11:30 a.m. AND online at 11:30 a.m. on Facebook, YouTube, or live.smark.org.
Summer break is coming to an end. It's time to get back in the swing of things again. Here are a few events to help you get in the grow in August. Be sure to save and share these slides.
