We just completed two, back-to-back FirstLight Alaska Inside Passage Photo Expeditions, aboard the “Northern Song”: those two groups were 6 participants each, plus Becky and me. Each adventure presenting unique photographic offerings: from bubble-netting humpbacks, Grizzly bears feeding in a stream, breaching humpbacks, orcas on a hunt, visiting a small Alaskan village, motoring in small rafts near the face of active glaciers as well as motoring in those skiffs among humpback whales rolling through the water a few feet from us. Add to this mix, incredible dining, plus the enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable assistance of Captain Harley and crew, Bart & Katy. Two truly memorable, visual, and wonderful experiences. Here are photos I shot during the first trip, that ran from August 28-September 4. Our FirstLight CM Ranch 2024 is done, what a great group of photographers and what a stunning body of work created by these folks! I decided to go back to my photographic roots at the rodeo, only shooting black and white with a fast 28mm lens. I just returned from National Geographic’s “Wildlife of the World by Private jet” Expedition. 25 days, which started in Singapore, then to Borneo, on to Ranthambore in India, to Sri Lanka’s Yala National Park, the Maldives, then Madagascar, on to Phinda Wildlife Reserve in South Africa, then finishing with the mountain gorillas in Rwanda.
Photographing wildlife can draw on that old saw about flying a plane: hours of boredom interrupted by moments of terror. If only the darn critters would give us advance notice when they’re about to do something interpreting.
More photos coming in next few days.

We’ll be posting info in a few weeks, through word-of-mouth, the 2024 Workshop is nearly half sold out already.
